Faulty TV no proof of purchase Argos, Halifax Cred Card

i purchased a tv from argos in feb 2014, it stopped turning on about 3 weeks ago - 18 months old
Its a samsung and some basic research shows this is a common problem, generally to do with manufacture and using the wrong voltage of transister or something of the sort. Strangely, my previous samsung tv did exactly the same thing but i had the receipt and it was within a few months of purchase and i just took it back to Curry's and got a replacement.

This time around, I cannot find the receipt. I bought the tv with my halifax credit card and have located the transaction, but it only shows the date, the amount, and the fact it was Argos - no further detail.

I have spoken to halifax, they cannot recover any more info from their side on the transaction
I have spoken to argos, they cannot recover any info on the transaction as the data no longer exists (they remove it after 14 months apparently under DPA)
I have gadget insurance to cover the tv, but they need proof of purchase.

Im stuck - any ideas? thanks

What sort of insurance is it (e.g is it a proper insurance policy or an extended warranty sold by the shop)

They should be keeping sales records for 6 years for tax purposes, 14 months sounds like a bit of a cop out.

If you can remember the store you bought it from the contact centre should be able to view all transactions made in that store for that particular item for February. It would then be a case of going through the transactions to see which is you.

Maybe you're right about them having to keep individual sales records for six years - I don't know.

One thing is certain though - it is for the buyer to provide proof of purchase, and the seller has no obligation to search their records for that proof, although many will.

The OP has the exact date from their records so no need to search the whole of February's sales, but as above if the seller doesn't want to do that then they don't have to.

I'd perhaps try pointing out to them that a bank/card statement would likely be enough to satisfy a judge.

You could also point out that despite not having your card details stored due to DPA, that they will likely still have details of what the price for that particular tv was for that particular date. You may also be able to find a cached listing for the tv to show that it was being sold for that price on that date.

Although worth noting after 6 months, they can request that you prove the fault was inherent if claiming via your statutory rights rather than warranty.

Did you take out the extra warranty with Argos or is the insurance you have separate from Argos.

It's presumably out of the manufacturer's warranty, which is 24m on some Samsung products, but I think only 12m on TV's?
However if you think it's a generic fault on that model or series, ask Samsung if they will repair it on that basis-what do you have to lose?

I assume that you have an independent report stating that it was an inherent fault?
