Travel Insurance - dates to cover?

Could someone clarify the buying travel insurance advice from the site...

I have travel insurance covering the start of the first day of my actual travel / flight date and it ends around 3 days after my current return flight date (i might stay a few days extra). The total days covered is 17.

Is this the correct way to buy it? Or should i have brought it to cover the day that i BROUGHT the TICKET - which was around 6 months ago. Therefore should have brought annual cover?

Am i currently covered if i e.g. break my leg next week? (better not!)

Nothing has happened to jeopardise the holiday (i travel next week) but wanted to know what the best practice is as i don't understand the advice in the current weekly newsletter.

Thanks.

    Thanks.

The day you buy the ticket as it will cover you for things leading up to the actual travel date that prevent you from going-illness\hospitalisation ailrine failure (possibly).

I only have annual insurance (£40/year for a couple worldwide with NWide) so can't remember exactly but IIRC the actual travel cover for the holiday starts as soon as you buy it but it's only a single trip of however long you are actyually away from these shores.

The insurance company knows that you want cancellation cover from the day you take out the policy, they need to know the travel dates to assess the risk & cost.

I am travelling on Nov 1 for 2 weeks.
I brought the ticket around may 2015.
I bought the travel insurance for a single trip covering the nov 1 to 17 around june 2015.
I assumed i was covered these last 4 months for the relevant sections - cancellation etc. Yes?

So right now what i am covered for if for example i break my leg tomorrow. I am perfectly fit and looking forward to travelling - i just want to know best practice. I also have a holiday planned for next march so i probably should have brought annual cover.

You're covered for cancellation due to ill health of you or travelling companion (check policy very carefully for exact t&c's) so go break a leg! I started booking my holiday last October & took out insurance then, giving the travel dates as May/June this year. I became ill early May & have just received (most of) the money back from my insurance company.

When you apply for single trip travel insurance you are asked the dates of travel, not the date of cover, so you are covered from taking out the policy

OK, thank you. I don't want a broken leg or any illness - I just want to clear up that i am covered (and have been) for unexpected events as per my policy. I phoned the insurance company and they said I'm covered for cancellation from the date the policy was brought.

I think that clears up my concerns. So the advice MSE are giving is just don't leave it late to buy travel insurance.

The advice you should always get on here is to buy your travel insurance soon after (or even before) you start booking, so that you're covered straight away.

Yes you are covered, since you bought single trip insurance.

Had you bought an annual policy, the start date should have been when you bought the ticket.

    Yes, which is good advice.

Unfortunately MSE also promote ANNUAL insurance, without explaining that it is slightly more complicated and the cancellation element works differently. I think that a lot of people using this board do not understand the difference.
