I have seen a car I would like to buy! Problem is, it has a reconditioned engine? Will this put you off buying?

It would depend on the standard the engine had been reconditioned to, why it had needed reconditioning in the first place, and how the price compared with a good example which hadn't needed reconditioning.0

As already mentioned the providence of the recon engine would be pivotal.0

reconditioned doesnt mean anything in relation to an engine
a proper reconditioned engine
http://www.federationofengineremanufacturers.co.uk
see link would have proper paperwork a thermometer type device on engine block and a warranty
anything else can mean a steam clean from a crashed car to one joe built in his garden shed, personally modern engines are in the main junk if they need a rebuid as tolerances mean theres nothing left to play with
tread carefully or better run away ,nice to know they told you though but they probably see it as a sales aid rather than a sales no no0 -
Engines go wrong and need replacing, when you buy a used car, it will come with a used engine.0

There was a knocking noise on the engine so it was taken off and sent for rebuilt/reconditioned. I think this is because of high mileage (>150k). The difference between reconditioned and not is around the 2k mark. Sorry, forgot to mention the car is a mondeo 2.5t titanium sport.

Not all members of the FER are as trustworthy as they might seam.
The one in my Town simply buys engines from the local scrappyards, cleans them up and swaps them for the knackered units in the car.Never Knowingly Understood.

probably a better engine than most out there with that mileague0

All you can do is go by your gut instinct.
Best to try and work out why the engine was replaced, was it neglect or unceasing thrashing or both, either way the rest of the vehicle has probably suffered worse neglect, ie possible the gearbox has ever seen fresh oil since it was made.0 -
As patman99 mentions, not all recon engines are equal.
Check the engine is it spotless and cleanly painted or does it look like its been sitting on the floor of a scrapyard open to the elements?
Recon could be ripped from a scrapped vehicle and fitted, or ripped washed and fitted or actually opened up and new parts fitted.
