Cash deposit at post office gone missing, no one accepting responsibility

Indeed! I've used this free facility at the Post Office to pay cash into my Santander account, I think for most banks it is available. The cashier takes your card, enters the amount which then shows on the card terminal, you press "ok" and it's in your account, cashier returns your card and the receipt. They will have to sort out what went wrong in this instance. It's curious that the OP's cheque deposit, a separate process, also did not enter their account.
I believe the process works slightly differently with each bank. When paying into a Halifax current account at the post office I do NOT use my card.0
