Barclaycard - closing account and reapplying

Does anyone know how long you need to wait after closing a barclaycard initital to reapply for a 0% balance transfer barclaycard

My credit file rebuilding plan seems to be working as online checkers now give me a 90% chance of getting a barclaycard 0% balance transfer card, but when I applied I was rejected as I have an initital card - the only one they'd give me 2 years ago!!

I currently have a balance on a Crapital One card that I'd like to transfer to 0% if I can, and barclaycard is according to MSE my best chance of acceptance for a 0% transfer . . . .

    It's 6 months with Barclaycard.

You can hold 2 Barclaycards at the same time, so if you applied and were rejected, it's probably down to something amiss in your credit files rather than you already hold 1 card with them.

No the letter I received clearly said unable to process application due to you already having a card with us.

I don't know what's changed in the space of a year, but I hold 2 Barclaycards. In fact when I called, they encouraged me to apply for a second card (the 36 months balance transfer card) and that I could split the limit from my old card if the new card didn't provide a large enough limit.

Perhaps give their CS department a call and see what they say.

May be worth speaking to retentions dept at BC on 0800 068 4369 rather than the normal customer service line. They seem to have more power to make nice things happen.

I think it is a recent change though their website is confusing, one page says you can but now you can't.

Here's an email I'd received from them recently:

    Thanks for your message.

Please accept my apologies for all the inconvenience caused to you.

Unfortunately you're only able to apply for one Barclaycard.

We've recently looked at our policy and decided that existing customers can no longer apply for another card. However, we do have a range of other offers available for existing customers, which you can find by logging into Barclaycard online account services.

However, we're continuously reviewing our products and services for both new and existing customers - so you may see some similar benefits added to your card in the future.

You can apply for a new Barclaycard account 6 months after closing your previous account.

Should you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact me again.

It is indeed a recent change, not to say that it's permanent though - they've changed it several times in the past - I've held a Barclaycard for a continuous period of over ten years now, at a time they had a selection of cards which could be applied for by existing cardholders (Barclaycard Breathe, the green one, amongst other things), a policy of being able to hold a visa and a MasterCard product (they don't seem to have offered a MC since the Egg takeover) and, recently no restriction at all.

I suspect the recent absence of restriction, coupled with the forthcoming EU crackdown on interchange fees, has opened their eyes - churning the free night certificates on the Hilton card, for example, with its low minimum spend threshold and no annual fee, is unsustainable if people simply do it and cancel.

EDIT - not sure if they still do this, but my oldest Barclaycard is still active, as they've allowed me to change it several times - it's currently the Cashback Amex/Visa pair, which is a pretty good product not advertised at the moment - it would be worth giving them a call to see if they'll move you over to that one?

Thanks all, but as it's going to take less than 6 months to clear the balance on my crapital one card anyhow probably not worth bothering with.

I applied for my second barclaycard 2 month ago and was accept instantly online so I could see both of my accounts on mybarclaycard.

Unless they've changed it in the last 2 month, I think its fine for you to apply for a second card.
