Noisy alarm

  • We have a fan on at night for its nice noise, as Gavin suggested. We're in a block of flats with a metal staircase unfortunately right next to our bedroom. People walking down it with stampy feet drive me nuts!

Costs money: outlay and ongoing running costs.

Yes you could just continue to suffer poor sleep because your too tight to shell out a couple of pence a night for a fan like this poster. Or just get one and sleep. Your choice.
  • The noise of a fan running all night would drive me potty. I wouldn't sleep at all. I'd prefer to just have the alarm to put up with.

OP, I think you have to learn to live with it.

Stop banging on their wall. Go round and be polite but up-front about it. "I'm really sorry to bother you, but you've got an alarm clock that's quite loud and it wakes me up. I wondered if it's possible to turn it down a bit?"

    If they're rude, walk away.

If it doesn't work, contact your local council. Google "town name council noise" and you'll find their webpage about their process for dealing with noise disturbances. You can follow the official procedure. They may or may not be able to help as most councils won't deal with "normal living noise" so it depends how they define it.

The only problem with the council route is that if you own the property and sell it in the future, you'll have to declare the dispute as there'll be a paper trail.

Our neighbour sent an anonymous letter complaining about our alarm. We did try to be more considerate but DH has to get up for work so not much we could do. On the flip side, we always know when she has a new boyfriend...

My husband is dreadful when it comes to getting up in the morning. He bought a new gadget to improve his alarm. he had been using this every weekday for several weeks - I didn't hear it as I leave the house before his alarm goes off. I finally heard it on a day off - and banned it, the noise was dreadful!!!!

Our (v friendly) neighbours commented a few days later - my husbands alarm was louder then theirs!!!! thankfully, the it went off just after theirs, so the damage was minimal. He was mortified, and very apologetic.

Point is, like my lovely husband, some folk are genuinely rather dense until after that first coffee, and may be oblivious to the impact the alarm is having on you. Go chat to them.

When I lived in an old terraced house, there wasn't much insulation in the attic and my neighbour would wake me up several times in the night because she coughed so loudly.

If the neighbour doesn't want to change their alarm, there isn't that much you can do - it's not exactly an unusual noise. Is your bed against the party wall - can you move it to the other side of the room? Or look into improving the sound insulation on the wall?

Sometimes it happens in your own house. My daughter sets her alarm on snooze two hours before she gets up (goes off every ten mins). She apparently believes she will get up THAT early every time. To complement is, OH sets his about 40 mins before he gets up. Also on snooze. So for 40 mins at least an alarm goes of every 5 mins. All the same noise on the same phones.

I put my alarm on silent :rotfl::rotfl:

About 40 years ago when we were growing up, my Dad used to get up early for work. He would go into the bathroom, flush the chain, gargle, blow his nose, have a good cough etc. our neighbours daughter said it was like living next door to a zoo
