Noisy alarm

Hello not sure if this goes here so please move if need be.

My next door neighbour has an alarm clock. A very loud alarm clock. It goes off 4 times in the morning. An hour apart...I am getting really sick of waking up a hour at times before my shift, not being able to go back to sleep and feeling shattered because of it. I have a feeling it is one of their daughters. It goes off all week and weekend without fail and there have been times where I've have to knock on the wall to get them to switch it off. I want to say something but we've never got on and wondered if anyone had any ideas on how to approach it?

Thanks in advance

You could try talking to them about it.

She said she wants to say something....its what to say thats the problem!

OP is there any chance you could swap bedrooms? If you've got kids in the other room, I bet they'd sleep right through it (certainly if they're teenagers, in my experience, lol).

Otherwise, I really don't know what to suggest other than ear-plugs!
I let my mind wander and it never came back!

Knocking in the wall before talking to them probably hasn't helped. Talk to them nicely about turning the volume down or not having it next to the joining wall.

You could ask your neighbour what model the alarm clock is, and where he bought it from as you'd like to get one just like it. Drop into the conversation that you know its a good one from living next door to him, a change in working patterns means you're rota'd for some 3am shifts and there's no way you would be able to sleep through the din!

Expect an objection to be raised and then make your point.

  • My alarms probably drive the guy next door nuts on his days off or when he's on lates. Trouble is, after he's on earlies for the previous week, he wakes me up without fail when he leaves at 4am, so there's no way a normal alarm would be able to wake me up (when I eventually do go to sleep, it takes something close to repeated compact nuclear explosions to get through to me). He's probably none too keen on the OH's alarm either, as his goes off much later due to his working patterns. And then at weekends, their kids are up early and/or we're up late.

It's just one of those things. We don't deliberately set out to annoy each other, but even with very new, well soundproofed houses, we can't help doing it; we also can tell that we have exactly the same IKEA chest of drawers in our rooms, as the sound of the drawers opening and closing is audible throughout the house.

I certainly wouldn't dream of banging on the wall or complaining that he'd woken me up - that would be really rude. And not his problem.
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

I presume you're in a block of flats? When I was living in a studio flat in an old block of flats I swear I used to be able to hear my neighbours thoughts, the walls were that thin.

Given that you don't get on with them, any mention of the alarm clock annoying you will probably only encourage them to switch it on louder/more often.

If at all possible I would find another room to sleep in, away from the noise. They're obviously one of those people who sleep like a log and need something akin to an air-raid siren to wake them of a morning.

What sort of time are we talking about, just out of interest? Is it very early?

It goes off 4 times each one an hour apart, so for 4 hours in total? Am I reading this correctly?

My DS can sleep through alarms, if I hadn't witnessed him doing it with the alarm next to his head, I wouldn't have believed it! In an attempt to make him more self sufficient he bought a sonic boom alarm, which does wake up, but he keeps setting it at silly o'clock, ie 5.30 so wakes up, switches it off and falls back asleep.

The culprit next door isn't a teenager is it?
  • if you don't get on with the neighbour, the likelihood of it having any impact talking to them is slim, but worth trying.

If that fails, have you thought about moving rooms?

If that is not possible your final option is to invest in a sound proofing layer on the wall that joins the property, you might lose an inch or two off your room, but it will make a significant impact if you fit the correct sound proofing

Get a fan, ideally quite loud and leave it running overnight. If it's cold face it away from you. The noise of the fan should drown out the noise of the alarm and you'll get a peaceful nights sleep.

    You can thank me later!

Costs money: outlay and ongoing running costs.
