What are your favourite Board Games?

Pictionary is funny

Backgammon is good, but it's for 2 players only.
I would love to learn Mah-Jongg, myself, which is a 4-player game.
Mah Jong is a great game, I have an antique set but no longer have anyone nearby to play.
It is basically Rummy on dominos.
We used to play a lot of card games as a family and dominos as well, if you can get a board, cribbage is a challenging game for four players.0 -
You could try Space Alert if you want really good silly fun, I would think an 11 year old would be able to get the hang of it. I love co-op games where you all play as a team. Its only really good if you play it with the app though.
Our games always have someone yelling "DID SOMEONE PUSH THE BUTTON"

lol, we have enough trouble playing Space Alert with 4 adults. We've hardly got past the training missions!
... it might just be that we suck :rotfl:
Great game tho
I didn't suggest it above cos it used to be quite hard to get hold of. Maybe that's changed...
PS Co-op games ftw!Mortgage when started: £330,995

More recent games have completely knocked the socks off older naff "roll and move" games like monopoly etc
A few recent ones have already been mentioned as good entry level ones in this thread:
Catan
https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/13/catan
Ticket to Ride
https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/9209/ticket-ride
Pandemic
https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/30549/pandemic
Carcassone
https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/822/carcassonne
Before buying any game I highly recommend looking it up on https://www.boardgamegeek.com for reviews, alternatively simply looking at the top 100 rated games on there will give you a reasonable steer.
Space alert is fun but starting to up the complexity and requires audio faff so might not be the ideal one to grab
Personal recent recommendations:
If your kid is into superheroes the DC deckbuilding game is ace:
https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/125678/dc-comics-deck-building-game
A recent release spy / word association game (published by the same people as space alert) works very will but needs 4 players minimum
https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/178900/codenames
I also recommend 7 wonders as a good mainstream entry level game (card drafting)
https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/68448/7-wonders
Most of the above can be found on amazon or other online boardgame stores. All the above play in 60-80 minutes except codenames (20mins) and 7 wonders (50-60mins)0 -

Our games seem to go well until the replay/resolving phase and that "so did we just completely forget to put out the triple !!! ship attacking us from the left?" oops moment occurs... better put it out and see what happens when it appears
Sometimes you get lucky if someone quietly got bored and decided to launch all your missiles rather than look out the window 'just for fun'
There are a couple of free apps on apple/android that let you randomly generate missions and dial the difficulty up/down as necessary0 -
Labyrinth - me and my OH play occasionally! My family love it at Christmas too.
Jx2024 wins: *must start comping again!*0 -
Monopoly (already suggested)
Pictionary (No need to buy the game as you can use items already in your house eg pens, scrap paper, an egg timer)
Kerplunk0 -
Dominion.
The advantage of this is you can easily play with 2 people and I find there are so few good games suitable for just two people.0 -
We love Monopoly and I have the original and Las Vegas edition. My son (22) bought me 'Ticket to Ride' board game last Christmas and it is such a great game and my daughter played it last year when she was 12.
I know it's not a board game but we have had loads of family fun playing darts. Also helps kids with maths skills.0 -
Just had to mention Balderdash. Inventive game all about lying and coming up with ridiculous 'facts'. Our family always end up crying with laughter over it every Christmas.I am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a Mortgage Adviser, so you need to take my word for it.
