I'm really looking forward to it my classes look interesting! The uni I'm going to fingers crossed) Sheffield Hallam won't accept you with a level 2 maths now they want a GCSE ( just decided this year!)
Good luck. Let me know how you get on.0 -

If I can do GCSE maths you can!!!! Tho if the uni's you are looking at wanted it you would know by now your tutor would have told you, so you're off the hook, plus you've got level 2 so you're halfway there.
But Science.. OMG thank god I don't have to do that, though I have a friend who's just done GCSE Science and got in the top 5 in the COUNTRY in her marks. How good is she!!!0 -

When I did my social work diploma... erm..oh gosh, 12 years ago the key words were paramount importance.
I also agree with vomityspice that the topic is very vast and sockospice was very true in saying that they will also be looking at how you interact with others, i.e. not jumping into the convo all the time, listening to others views.
When I had my initial interview we had to pick a card from a pack and say how we would deal with that certain situation so at least you have some warning as to what you have to talk about. Anyway, after the interview and being told if we were on the course, we were told by the tutors that they were not necessarily looking at knowledge (otherwise why would you go to uni to learn!) but more about the interaction.
A Social Workers role seems so varied and so stressful. Unfortunately after qualifying I never went into social services because it seemed to be more about managing a damn budget than helping clients with what they really needed.
A social worker in todays society is indeed complex. They liaise heavily with so many other workers e.g. occupational therapists, hospital social workers, families, outside agencies. With the pressure on the NHS to release bed spaces social services I think are more and more stretched to help people be cared for at home, in their community. Also does the direct payment scheme still exist whereby the client can choose how their "care" money can be spent as opposed to social services just buying in a home carer. This seems to be one of the key things at the moment in helping to empower clients.
Anyway, sorry, rabbiting on. Good luck and I'm absolutely sure you'll do fine.

PS. Which area do you think you might be interested in working with? Adults or child & family?0 -
I'm not trying to be clever or funny here, but- buy a newspaper or two! The Guardian and The Times have excellent websites that you can search and I know the Guardian has a weekly pull out section on the public sector which might be useful. There's been an awful lot written in the papers over the past week ago about how society is "broken", the need for families, role models and early intervention with vulnerable families - I am sure at least some of it would make interesting reading for you.0

I've never heard of a GCSE in Science being required but that's not to say that some places won't. It's a statutory requirement for social work training that you have GCSEs in English and Maths. Recently many universities have allowed people with a level 2 numeracy certificate to count that as equivalent, but not always. Best to reckon on getting the Maths GCSE.0 -

I agree, there are 2 big uni's where I live, one accepts level 2 equv the other doesn't, however, next year they both will require GCSE..
