I don't really agree with you - the car we own now is taxed for October and if I cancelled it tomorrow I would lose the rest of the month but if I taxed my 'new' car tomorrow I would have to pay from the start of October again - that's being charged twice for the same thing.

This is how it has ALWAYS been ! You have never been able to receive a refund mid month for VED.

Say you are band G and paid £180 for the year and going to a band G - you will only lose out about £15......which will probably be less than quarter of a tank of petrol....are you going to make sure that you drain the tank AND fuel filter before the trade as well?

If you are that worried about it, SORN the new car on the day of the switch and tax it from 1st November, although I do not believe the inconvenience will be worth £8.50.

Either do the switch at the end of next week or do it now, the "loss" is really a very small part of annual car ownership.

    Live well !

And don't forget that the £180 band G is above-average VED...

The average car on the UK roads pays £166 VED. That's the average of all cars - from zero VED through to £505, as well as all the £230 pre-2001 1550cc+ cars.

The average new car sold in the UK in 2013, 2014 and 2015 has been in the £110, <130g band - nearly 70% of new cars are in that band or below - and the average is now getting very close to the 120g/£30 band. The average new car hasn't been up in that £180 band for about seven years.

I thought this was a site that championed saving money so I was just checking if there was a way to do this.

You still won't convince me that I'm not being charged twice for the same thing.

The question about insurance doesn't really apply as it will be an entirely different type of vehicle so a different insurer.

Anyway I think we'll leave it at that, I'll just pay and get on with it!

OK, so how much are you being charged to cancel the old policy?

It's not a question of "how to do it". You can't do it. You've never, ever been able to get partial month refunds, or pay for partial month VED. You've been told the only way not to "double-up", and that's to SORN the incoming vehicle until next month.

We're merely pointing out that it's a question of a sense of proportion. How excited are you getting for what, in all probability, is less than a tenner, and is not even one of the larger costs of changing vehicle?

In Spain you pay road tax annually - no refund.

You also pay 4% tax every time you change your car, even second hand.

The system in the UK is much fairer. And people still think they're getting ripped off...

I'm with the OP, before the system changed you didn't have to cancel the VED, it transferred to the new owner. Now you have no option but to cancel it so if you buy a car mid month you will have to pay 2 months VED, 1 month on your old car, 1 month on your new. So in the grand scheme of things, yes it's probably less than a tenner but it's the principle, you have to pay twice.

If I move house mid month I don't have to pay council tax on both properties for the full month, why do I have to pay VED for the full month on 2 vehicles if I buy a new one?

IIRC the official figure was that over two-thirds of keeper changes were of untaxed cars, so the problem is fairly limited. It's kind of a necessary evil when it comes to getting rid of the daft piece of round paper from the windscreen - because of the risk of the old keeper cancelling the tax while the V5C's in the post. Yes, they could have done that anyway by saying the old disc was lost, but...

VED has always worked on full months. The computer systems won't be set up to handle any greater granularity than that.

I appreciate what you're saying, it's a legacy issue that would cost got knows how much to switch to a daily VED set up, seeing as our beloved government does not have the best track record with IT projects...

It just seems hugely anchronistic that in this day and age VED is only available in whole months. Like I said above if I move house mid month I don't have to pay full months council tax on both properties. If I switch jobs mid month I don't pay a full month income tax on both salaries.

I'm in the process of buying a new car and the cost of the VED refund & new VED overlap will be less than .1% of the cost of the new car but I still find it annoying that I will pay 13 months of VED this year for having a car on the road of 12.

I realise the OP is not doing this but, if you were to trade in your old car PX and buy another car from a trader or dealer, the system is exactly the same. The dealer would give you your tax disc back with a form to send it to the DVLA to claim back any tax not used in whole months. Then you had to tax the new car for the whole of the month you are in. So unless you did the trade on 30/31 and went back and got your car on 1 then you would always be paying double tax.

Not a great example, since income tax is not time-based in any way. You would pay the same tax if you earned the same income in one day or across all 365 days.

Well, don't buy a pre-registered one in bands B to D, because the first-year discount is ONLY on the very first taxing, and even if the keeper changes after a week, it doesn't apply to the second keeper. But if it's in band H or above, you'll be better off, because the same applies to the first-year supplement...
