Teacher not marking work

If the parent wanted to wait until parents' evening, that's what would happen.
I'd agree but good on you OP for taking an interest. If Open Evening is coming up soon then I wouldn't worry about it. If it's another half a term (near Christmas) then I would suggest an email asking why no feedback starting with individual teacher then escalating to Head of Department before even thinking about the Head.
Are you sure its not just that you want to know how you got on OP?;)0 -
No the summer holiday mark is back so she knows how she did
I have some experience of working in a high school and I wouldn't leave it to parents evening as that is to discuss the child's progress and not to be wasted listening to excuses about marking. I'd be making an appointment to see the teacher this week -or if she's not available the head of English.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

Thanks everyone for the feedback.
To clarify, I am of course leaving the decision to her father, but am trying to support him and the thoughts here have been gratefully received.
By doing it together, I was offering support only and it was all her own work. I think it's important to offer support and guidance when asked. The essays so far have been a mixture of independent and supported. And yes, we have had the results from the one I sat with her to complete.
Thanks again - plenty of very constructive advice to get this resolved positively for all parties.0 -
As an ex English teacher, I am taken aback that anyone would ask students to produce an essay a week! I don't know what current regulations are, but I would ensure that essays would be marked and handed back out within a week, certainly 2, so they are still fresh in the mind and students can more easily see where they are doing well and where they will need to improve. Then take this understanding to the next essay. (In addition, at GCSE, I would have worked with them on understanding the assessment criteria so they appreciate the hoops they are being asked to jump through!) An essay a week sounds like poor planning to me and, maybe, panic.
BUT to address your question: I would address this issue with the teacher in the first instance BEFORE parents evening. The reason being that there isn't much time during parent's evening to address everything and at parent's evening time can be given over to discussing the child's motivation, confidence in speaking up in class, group work etc, as well as writing. AS others have said, approach it calmly asking for clarification re. what's going on, the thinking behind it etc. Also, be clear about the impact this is having on your step-daughter (I'm wondering how this impacts on her other studies) If you are unhappy with the teacher's response, then let her know that you will be discussing the matter with the Head of English and do that asap.0 -
I suppose it depends on what the support was. She may still need sme help with the layout / research methods of an assignment.
I would expect that to form part of the teaching before the assignment is set.Member #14 of SKI-ers club
