Teacher not marking work

The school/department should have a marking strategy, I would contact the teacher, if the essays aren't adequately marked within a week I would then go to the head.
While most pupils completely ignore marking it is so important to ser how the pupik is doing and so those who care about learning aren't just relying on verbal feedback.0 -
Where I work, four weeks is the absolute maximum time allowed between submission and feedback being given, regardless of holidays etc.
Exceptions are rarely made... not even wardrobe sorting. Death might just about do it.0 -
I taught English in a secondary school.
This is disgraceful. Pupils should have work, coursework in particular, marked for both achievement and guidance, promptly. Obviously, this dies not mean over-night, but I'd say a week is about right.
What else is the teacher doing? External marking, maybe?
Edit to add:
I would complain to the Head. I had experience with a senior teacher who didn't mark work, not that he set much. Complaints against him never got as far as the Head, who told me that Mr X never had anyone complain about him,Member #14 of SKI-ers club

Is any of this essays part of her controlled assessment work for her GCSE? It very much does sound like it. If it is so, then I do believe it does take longer to be marked, and also it then needs to be reviewed internally, so it does take longer to get the final mark.
A bit dubious that a teacher would actually say that they'd prioritised clearing up the cupboard before marking work though.
Coursework grades can be given, with the proviso that they will be subject to moderation by the rest of the department and / or an external assessor.Member #14 of SKI-ers club

Sarcasm can be lost on teenagers.
We've been assessing every kid in the school in every subject for a massive data drop, had Open Evenings, Open Days, already had some parent evenings, various evening events, etc, etc. Plus the usual staff changes over the summer, new TAs not bothering to turn up, the post mortem on last term's exam results, blah, blah,
Needing a holiday could easily be shorthand for 'I nearly walked out this school and never looked back'. Which would have resulted in that summer holiday essay never being marked. Although I do think that teaching staff need to be reminded that other staff in the school will be going straight into summer jobs because they don't earn enough to live on what they get paid, so won't be getting any holiday at all, not even the legal minimum.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0 -
It might just flag up to other members of the department that she isn't managing.
My first Head of Department had a nervous breakdown and when we delved into her room there were piles and piles of unmarked work.
She walked out of the middle of a lesson one day and I never saw her again.0 -
My step daughter is 14 and currently studying poetry in her English Literature GCSE course. This started before the summer break and she had submitted one comparison essay prior to the holidays. During the holiday she had another to complete, which we did together and she worked very hard on.
.
Just had to pick up on this bit I'm afraid. At this stage of her education, surely she should be doing the work independently?0 -
Personally I would poltely email the teacher involved, asking f or feedback on the essays and how she is doing. If you don't get a response in, say, seven days or so, resend it, with a copy to the head.
As others have said, don't go in guns a blazing til you know the whole story.Never again will the wolf get so close to my door :eek:0 -

I suppose it depends on what the support was. She may still need sme help with the layout / research methods of an assignment.Never again will the wolf get so close to my door :eek:0 -
In the situation of being a step parent I would defer to the judgment of the parent and take no action regarding their child's education without their agreement.
If the parent wanted to wait until parents' evening, that's what would happen.Proud member of the wokerati, though I don't eat tofu.Home is where my books are.Solar PV 5.2kWp system, SE facing, >1% shading, installed March 2019.Mortgage free July 20230
