It depends what you are currently using by way of fats tbh!

If you currently use margarine or transfats in your cooking and baking then switching to coconut oil would probably do you good. But if you already use "good" fats such as olive oil, butter etc in appropriate quantities, then there is no evidence that coconut oil is any better or worse than these.

It is a "fashionable" food at the moment which means that some sites and diet plan gurus make superfood claims for it but none of these have been scientifically proven, and to be honest if you wouldn't pour a slug of olive oil into your coffee every morning or eat two tablespoons of butter in a hope of losing weight I wouldn't suggest you do this with coconut oil either as it's just another saturated fat! I do cook with it sometimes as it has a high smoking point (higher than olive oil) and it isn't unpleasant and can enhance some recipes.

Some people also use it for beauty purposes. I don't fancy slathering my hair in any kind of cooking oil to be honest and value my dental health too much to replace my normal Colgate with coconut oil, but each to their own!

    As a beauty product?

I don't get on with it- my skin is fickle and coconut oil is too dense for it. It gives me spots and feels like a layer on my skin, it also makes my skin look shiney and feel dry after a few hours of it being there. Not for me, love the scent it has but just don't get on with it.

As a cooking product it has a low heating point before the healthy fats become trans fats from what I understand so as much as its good for salads it's not so healthy to cook with as trans fats are not good for anyone in any way.

I use it on my cuticles and skin just below my nails, as it gets really dry and peels bad... Coconut Oil works a treat!
  • I eat it, use it in food, clean my teeth with it and put it on my skin, including hands. I think I can see an improvement in my face, and I believe this comes from eating the stuff.

I have never cooked with it but it makes a good moisturiser.
  • While I was eating fried food a couple of years back I used coconut oil. It works quite nicely adding to the flavour of fried eggs. I love the smell of it and eat quite a lot of it.

It's very heat stable and makes a good cooking oil, especially if the smell and taste appeals to you.

There are people who question it's health properties, saying it is harmful but people have been saying that saturated fat was harmfdul for 50+ years. That was recently proved to be wrong and actually known to be promoted by the American food oil manufacturers with their damaging oils who feared the rise and potential popularity of other oils damaging their business. They called in favours at the world health organisation and got the WHO to promote the lies about saturated fats and natural oils such as butter etc. Instead everyone has been overdosing on Omega 6 oils which has worked out very damaging to everyone's health.

I purchased 25Kg or might of been 25 Litres the last time I bought Coconut Oil.

I used to use it all the time, but found it difficult to buy when I moved to Cyprus, however, brought a little stock back with me from the UK a couple of months ago. I had forgotten how good it was, and I love the smell.

I've been using it for cooking stir fries, as they need quite a high heat, so better than olive oil for that. Haven't really used it for anything else in the cooking line.

I use it as a facial scrub, just a little coconut oil on the palm of my hand, sprinkle on a little bicarb of soda, obviously work well into the face, and then rinse off with water.
I also use is as a night moisturiser, a little goes a long way, and use it on dry elbows too.
I'd probably use it as a body moisturiser or scrub too, but as I can't get it here, I'm trying to make it last as long as possible, as it will be a while before I'm back in the UK.
