i cancelled sky a few months ago. took 15 minutes. They did try to offer me incentives, but just said no thanks.

got regular weekly emails offering all sorts, but had no bother really.

Miracles do happen then? If OP does a Google on cancelling with Sky you may find some horror stories https://www.google.com/search?q=horror+stories+cancelling+with+sky&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8

So to update everyone, I rang them during my lunch break today. I found out that the broadband deal i was looking at isnt available where i live, so i was looking at a 12 month deal with someone that would end up around £35 a month. Thought id test the water with Sky on what they could do around this.

for £36 a month i have my fibre broadband, phone, and basic tv package (with basic sky channels + the channels i would watch through freeview), with the added bonus of being able to use the sky+ feature... going to put some £££ aside now to get a freeview recording box so in 12 months time i can free myself but still have the recording feature! but im happy with £36 a month for 12 months!
  • Hi all.. Yes the Sky box will still receive all of the free to air channels even after the subscription has ended.... however has anyone else thought of this I wonder.....
You are actually the proud owner of your sky + HD box, but the recoding features have been disabled by those nice people at sky. Should we not still be able to record and playback the free to air channels on the box that we own even without a subscription to sky?
If I went to a retailer and bout a satellite receiver with a built in hard drive I would be able to do this without any problems, so why not with my already installed sky box? After all, I do own the box. Any thoughts?

A few quid to an aerial installer to check/replace your aerial cable, drop Sky, and you'd have the money for the Freeview recorder in 2 or 3 months, not 12....

It's a reasonable point. How do Sky describe this limitation in their Ts & Cs?

I suppose the first step is to write to Sky, asking them to re-enable the recording facility. When they fail to do so, you could then seek out a comparable piece of equipment with the Recording facility, and begin legal proceedings to sue Sky for its cost.

I have no idea what the legal arguments would be, but it would be a fascinating test case.

That sounds unreasonable, since the box cannot function without the software.

In fact, it sounds like they want to hold control over the asset whilst rendering customers liable for maintenance and repair costs.

The decryption of the encrypted channels that you're entitled to watch, and whether you can record or not, is all controlled by the card. Which remains the property of Sky and you will never own...
