One thing that is easy to forget to add into your "schedule" is taking time to do something that makes you feel good. Could be as simple as a cup of proper coffee, a bubble bath: anything that takes your fancy.
Add this to doing something each day that is productive gives. Nice balance, I think.

Summer time I play golf, pub lunch, play golf, drive to son or daughter (depending on day) for dinner. Gym/swim, gentleman's club for nightcap.

Wintertime I Sunbathe, go for swim, club lunch, play golf, swim, sunbathe, evening golf, club for supper.

I am currently looking for a rich widow who owns a pub beside a golf course. PM me if you fit the bill.

    You are so lucky.
And i struggle here for not having enough time.
The only time I get for myself is in the weekends. :(

Not easy when working 2 jobs.
And I would love to work from home.
Where can I get that kind of job ?

I am so chuffed that people have been interested enough to answer my post. Your thoughts and ideas have really given me food for thought. We are all so different. Kittie I love your word 'contentment', conjures up so much. Once you've kondo-ed your house, what will be the next project? I agree about getting up, but I kick against structure and routine, hence have always chosen jobs that didn't require it and gave freedom. I like getting up and going early as I often find I can think and problem solve in the shower, and also, I've only got one life, maybe 20-30 years left, I need to make the best use of it. Awareness of mortality and all that!

Today I have mostly been faffing about -I'm good at that - that and pottering! Up, showered, breakfast, some emails etc all done by 9. Spread a bit more muck, a bit of computer work, including paid stuff. Out to village, posted letter, took out some cash. Home, had home made soup for lunch. More faffing, a bit of hoovering, cleaned bathroom, now waiting for plumber to come round to look at some work that needs sorting.

That is a typical day for me, I don't impress myself one little bit!! However, this week I've decided it is house and garden week - so will do some decorating tomorrow. Next week is written off, half term. Following week I will have quite a bit of my paid job to get on with, but still not enough to fill the day with. I've been looking at U3A and WEA. The former seems busy but I don't really fancy any of the classes at the moment but will keep a look out. WEA has some interesting talks, but the nearest is about 20 miles away. I need to see if I can afford petrol for that. Going out on a cold night once I'm tucked up at home also detracts, but I do know I need to make more effort. To be honest, I think I spend too much of my day on 'me time'!!! While working full time I so looked forward to having more time, I should have thought more clearly what I'd do with it!

Scotsbob - thanks for your response, what are you offering in return?

Double V - up until recently I had 5 jobs. Now just 3 plus a bit of ad hoc stuff. All from home. I'm a Clerk to 2 different parish councils, I work for a charity (all admin-type jobs). Until recently I also worked for a holiday cottage company, doing bookings/sales working from home. I also had another job which wasn't from home - I'd never step outside otherwise! I just keep my ear to the ground, let people know I'm interested and scour the local papers, shop noticeboards etc. Lots of those kinds of jobs aren't advertised though, so letting people know/word of mouth is the best way.

Oh and ps, I don't believe in luck - not one little bit, it doesn't exist!!! It's up to us to make things happen.

Come on Mr Plumber - you're late!

The whole thread is interesting and food for thought.

I carried on until 4.30 and was suddenly exhausted, so the dregs of paperwork left were gathered together in a bundle and piled neatly in a couple of polypockets and (dumped) into the carry file in a cupboard. Just got a pile of printed recipes to put somewhere and a pile of ravelry downloaded patterns and then I am going to call an end to this clearing. I can walk into my fibre room now and the floor has a nice empty space and so has the desk. That will have to be good enough until I get my second spurt and that could be in winter. I am totally done in now, the house has been non stop for a long time

So what was positive today? I cannot really say that anything was, except that the dining table is now empty and I have cleared some spaces. I suddenly feel tired and always listen to my body, which is saying that I need to have some rest days now. I have sock knitting and maybe some plying on a spinning wheel and reading and may visit an NT property this week. I am prescribing some candles and some music for myself and all I am going to do are the essential daily chores and I am going to learn to play this new accordion of mine

I'm afraid I'm still in full time employment away from home, but it has been a treat to read this thread. It is so well-written and evocative, I can "see" you settling down in your favourite chair in front of the fire on a dark evening with a G&T. I can also picture the allotment and the tidying of the craft room.

Although still a worker, I love weekend days when I can say to myself "I have achieved something". It might be cleaning the greenhouse or smoothing out that pile of soil left when the rainwater drain was renewed, or it might be clearing out a wardrobe for things to put on ebay or replacing a curtain rail.

If I were retired, there is one thing I would definitely change in my routine - no more quick walks with the dog at 06.30! I would walk a little later, probably 08.00 and go a little further!

Yes Lisa, so important to plan ahead, even walking the dog times. I cannot imagine retirement without satisfying hobbies, it would be the loneliest time ever for me with nothing much to look forward to each day. Yes ok, many have holidays to look forward to but to me they just occupy time and lets face it, people like me, who are suddenly single, really don`t want holidays with strangers to be the thing in our lives to keep us going until we can go no more

I was lucky in that I already had lots of satisfying hobbies but the first new hobby after retirement was learning to spin and I got out a whole lot more on my steady cob. I would indeed suggest that some hobbies are started pre retirement, otherwise that day will loom ahead tinged with a blackness that you can`t put your finger on

I followed my own advice today and listened to my body. I got hm prepared food out of the freezer and am knitting socks, listening to the radio and will seek out a prime film later. All I am going is getting a folder for my recipes and that is it, no work whatsoever. Not seeing a soul today, no-one is about but I don`t mind that. I can talk to myself as much as I want, I am pretty good at having conversations with myself

Kittie, do you like listening to radio plays on iplayer? It's one of my favourite things to do while pootling in the greenhouse. I suppose I could carry on listening while doing other jobs in the garden, but I find those ear things simply do not fit me and fall out, usually right at the denouement! However, while cleaning the glass and putting up bubble wrap, it's brilliant. I download them at work where access is unlimited.

I enjoy that, but I find they are too short at 20 mns or so. Do you know of sites apart from R4 ?

You mean Four Extra Aggy?I find 60 to 90 minute radio programmes that I enjoy, or I will download a full serial in 3-8 parts and enjoy them all together. (Really love the Paul Temple ones, so redolent of another time!)
