  • The techie industry makes good bread and butter money from the failure point called 'jack plugs' when in fact the real problem is not the plug but the the people who pull, stress, bend, and generally abuse them - thank god such people exist to keep the poor techie earnings up. Hands up here those who have soldered hundreds then 'clagged' the plastic support(s) with hot glue to make them stable - till the next time someone has it on the arm of the chair / sofa !

Fair point Richie, could be being taken for an expensive cab ride, mark your spark plugs with nail varnish before a service ;)
Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.

Good point - but If I used bridezilla's nail varnish she'd kill me ........

I retired and sold the shops [and the telephone numbers] years ago, I'll bet I still get about 20 so called mates a year asking for the soddin power plug 'thingy' or associated cable repair. For those who think the repair cost is expensive it takes ages even for people who pull lots of cases apart every month :

    - rework the solder 5 minutes
    - rework the metal / plastic supports 15 minutes + drying time
    - dis and re assemble the case 30 minutes

...and that's about average for taking apart & reassembling.... some laptops were just not designed to be repaired, they are twonks and can take somewhat longer

  • Repair shop says there are no fuses on the motherboard. So it's had it. Apparently. I realise it's mainly my fault due to expecting it to withstand a bit of rough and tumble. Not Loads but enough obviously. I'm calling up to the shop tomorrow. They've offered to put all documents on my external hard drive (£20) and charge only for parts. Seems reasonable

To replace my power input it cost about £80 - this was in London though. It extended the life of my Samsung laptop for at least another year, until a hinge broke and also broke the plastic around the screen! I had my Samsung for about 3.5 years before I replaced it with my current one. I hope this one that cost almost double my Samsung lasts a lot longer!
  • How do you retrieve files from a defunct laptop and is it something I can do myself?

yes you can..remove the hard drive, get a suitable usb caddy to put it in (around £5 off ebay), plug into another pc/lappy, and read/copy the files to the new machine....simples ;)
