I think you will have to pay the price for you things to be shipped while telling them you are unhappy and will pursue a claim in the small claims court after delivery.
  • Hello D_M_E, the cost of collecting and putting into storage has already been paid, and I have never refused to pay the storage costs, but they messed up on the direct debit, telling me it had been sorted when it hadn't and all kinds, so the storage costs haven't yet been paid. Really the whole thing has been a complete sham from start to finish.

I am not sure how I am supposed to take them to the small claims court when I now live in a different country? Maybe Pickfords are playing on this fact also!

They have now told us what the volume is, and so we do have that information.

They also did tell us that our stuff would be shipped as a part load.

For the purpose of raising the case it doesn't matter where you are, as far as I can see from the guidance here.

Though if you want them to release your goods in the meantime that's probably a more complex sort of action, so you might prefer to instruct a solicitor.

I think the only way forward is to get another firm, hopefully NOT a BAR registered firm, and pay them to bring it over for us. Seeing as BAR are a waste of time and could be liken to a members protection scheme, as I know the members pay a high a price to be in it. And it seems they will be serving the interests of the hand that feeds them, not the consumer.

I will be making sure to warn everyone I know away from using Pickfords. and being someone who has a vast amount of contacts worldwide this bound to affect their business. I know not all the people who work there are bad people, the guys who came to pack the stuff were great guys, but the company have taken the side of their staff, when in my view if this is something he is constantly doing, he should be fired. And so they deserve what they get.

That does sound like its 95% Pickfords fault then. Certainly their fault for not noting down things like those suitcases. It does sound like only a couple of small bits then - and that you had the right to be contacted if they wanted to charge extra for that beforehand.

I wouldn't say BAR is a waste of time personally. When my last move resulted in problems with Pickfords, I just told the person in charge that, if they didn't put things right, then I would be contacting BAR. In the event - they did put things right and I didn't have to. They clearly didn't like the idea I would tell BAR what they had done if they didn't:) and wanted to prevent my doing that.

But ...yep...I tell everyone not to use them now. That - though mine was a much more minor incident than you have had.

Admitted mine might have been so much easier to deal with because it was only such a minor incident and I moved within the same country (ie within Britain).
  • Hi Moneyistooshort, thanks for your reply. I did tell them I was going to BAR and they just said go ahead, it didn't seem to worry them at all. I did fill out all their forms and send them away over a fortnight ago and still haven't heard back, and BAR does know we have no stuff here and no way to get any work done without it.

The whole thing has been so upsetting and stressful.

How much is the extra cost?

How long would it take you to earn that? It seems to me that while you are provaricating you are not earning!

You have the size of the shipment, do some comparisons but get your work equipment if you really can't work.

I have used Pickfords 4 times for house moves including from ( Scotland to England and England to Scotland) using 4 different depots.

I had excellent servoce each time. So much so that they were my first choice of movers each time.

One move did involve goods going into storage for several months, The goods were loaded onto a lorry from the house then transferred to a sealed container for storage.

We listed everything- really everything- that was packed. Each packing case was numbered and a list of contents made for each one.

    Everything was delivered as packed.

Through all the moves we have not had one breakage or loss or scratch on anythihg.

The only hitch was for our move from England they sent a normal sized van. Now our goods had come down in a pantechnicon and we had added to out family since then. The driver took one look at the gargage which was filled from back to front with packing cases and said that no way would everything fit on the van.

However, he knew the local pub was a lunchtime stop for any drivers in the area so he went down and got a second van to come up.

The goods were then transferred to one big van at the depot to be brought up to Scotland. As they would not be setting off until the next day this was not a problem.

When moving the last time, again the distance meant loading one day and travelling up the next. The driver offered to leave a bed and a couch for us to use for the one night and collected them first thing next morning before setting off.

You seem to fail to see the point here. I don't have that money now, how am I supposed to earn it to pay them so I can get my things, when they won't release them because they want the money first? Plus why should I pay for THEIR MISTAKE?
