Which Laptop?

I currently own a Sony Vaio VPCEE2S1E Laptop, it's done well but it's time for me to buy a new one.

Some of the things I haven't liked are the short battery life & I have had many problems with freezing issues.

I look at new laptops available and feel lost, there are so many to choose from.

My budget is around £450 max.
Uses will be for creating documents, emailing & general internet usage.

Can anyone recommend a good brand & value for money laptop please?

  • I forgot to add that I do run many programmes at the same time.

My current Sony Vaio is insured with PC world so I intend to sell this one and purchase a new one, therefore I won't be looking to do a trade in.

Years ago I had a Toshiba Sat Laptop and had nothing but problems with it.

I think a brand would be a good starting point for me?

The 8GB memory of the ASUS is good then.

Stupid question. Why does insurance with PC world mean you will sell rather than tradein?

Budget laptops (e.g. under £500) are all a bit of a gamble. I had the same experience with Toshiba but my current HP is good. Also had good experiences with Dell.

I'll let my son have the laptop because he is fine working from mains power because the battery isn't great. For me that travels alot, I do need a good battery.

Can i ask please what your experience is with HP? Also, is ASUS a reliable brand?

MacBook! You can get second hand macbook pros on eBay, and honestly, after being anti apple for years, it's been the best decision I made!

Once you get the hang of the differences they're much quicker, more reliable, less prone to viruses, crashes. . .the list goes on.

Also - for relatively cheaply, you can upgrade memory and hard drive as years go by.

Factory Restore and a new battery. Nine Cell battery for £21.80 Double the capacity of the battery in your machine. That means up to twice the operating time of the laptop when it was new. So up to four hours.
Six cell for £14.50 Up to three hours

I have a feeling that your issues are usually software related.

I'm still using a six year old Toshiba Satellite than cost me less than £250.

Factory restoring my laptop & fitting a new battery will not resolve my problems. The title says which laptop? Which indicates i am looking for a new laptop, not a battery.

I'm not sure if there are some posts missing here, with the mention of ASUS but I have just bought this one. i5, 8gb of ram and full HD screen for £399.

PC world are often uncompetitive but occasionally produce a bargain and this is about as good as I could find.

Toshiba and Sony were two of the better brands, but yet you've had 'issues'.
You write of freezing, but no mention of troubleshooting the cause.
I have a feeling that you will have issues with whichever brand that you purchase.
No one can assure you that you won't have issues with another laptop.

So perhaps you should learn to troubleshoot simple issues instead of buying a new one each time.

To be completely frank, I think the problem is with you. Anyone who buys a laptop from PC World and 'insures' it with them likely needs electric shock treatment. Accidental damage cover is useful, but....The likelihood is that you don't have a clue and take it to them for each and every issue without understanding what is going wrong.
If it is freezing, why don't PC World fix it under the care plan for which you have paid/are paying?
Perhaps the shock treatment might help with the attitude problem at the same time.

Electric shock treatment not required, bill shock treatment from PC World normally suffices.

    A question for the OP:

how long have you had the laptop and and how long have you being paying the insurance ?

If you add it up, it probably exceeds the cost of a new laptop.
Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.
