Hi guys,
Im wondering how difficult it would be to set up my own website and host it from my home pc.
Things ive learned so far that i'll need....
to register with dydns (or something
)
my pc will have to be on 24/7
I'll need to set up security measures
does anyone know of a site that will give me step by step instructions on how to do this myself?
thanks in advance

What ISP are you with at the moment? Thats the part what matters, you may not have the bandwith.0

1) you'll need a static IP address
2) I'd recommend getting a cheap machine off eBay (£10 for Dell PIII) and installing Linux (£free) to have a dedicated server rather than using your home PC. If you're leaving it on 24/7 and not 100% on-top of security it's a matter of when not if you get hacked.
3) Back-up, back-up, back-up. (see point 2!)
4) Or pay a modest fee (starting from approx £40?) to a web-hosting company.0 -
It's a great learning exercise (keep meaning to do it myself but haven't got round to it yet) but if you want reliability and security use the webspace most ISPs provide as part of the package.0

If you've got some money and don't want to leave your PC on all day just to power a webserver program, you could take a look at these nifty things:
Available on Ebay for £140, then you'll need a Sata drive to stick inside it.
Runs as network storage, print server, web server, iTunes server, you can host a bulletin board or forum, self-hibernates to save power, and you can access it from anywhere to download or retrieve files.

Don't forget most ISP Broadband packages are A(synchronous)DSL which means downloads can be anything between 512k and 8Mb, but uploads are normally restricted to around 400-500k.
This is great when you're browsing/downloading as you get the 8mb speed.
However, if your hosting a website your server will be uploading web pages at the 400-500k rate.
Ideally, you should consider S(synchronous)DSL where the up and down links are the same.
Hope this helps.0
