    Why?

Because it is a Vauxhall, I had several Vauxhall company cars (not my choice) they were all ok for about 60k after that nothing but problems, personally would never touch one.

Why? I have the 1.3 cdti and its fast (for the lighter corsa) never had a problem and returning nearly 70mpg

For the reasons as already stated above. A seven year old, sub 40K diesel Meriva screams 'local runs only' and that is not good news for a modern diesel engine.

Nowhere did the OP say he wanted to 'go fast', nor did he suggest he was concerned about getting 70MPG from his car. He suggested the choice was driven by the need for a more 'baby-friendly' means of transport. He may not give a damn if it's fast or not, as not everyone does care about that. With a baby on the way, it's probably not his first priority (he also said he drives a Scenic, which isn't exactly renowned for being a sports car).

I wouldn't go near it unless it had done twice that mileage, and even then I personally wouldn't, because driving a Vauxhall would make me a little sad.

If the 1.3 CDTi Meriva you are looking at is fitted with a DPF then avoid at all costs.

Given the choice of those 2 I would go for the petrol one.

Less to go wrong and Vauxhall have always made pretty decent petrol engines.

Nothing wrong with buying a Meriva.

    They are practical transport.

The stop gap Berlingo I bought might not be some bodies idea of fun but it is cheap practical family transport

I might actually keep it even when I buy something nicer.

Vauxhalls are good cars in my opinion. mine ones nearly 90k 2004 reg and I haven't had any major issues except turbo replacement. not sure why it will make you 'sad' they may not have the badge of more fancycars but do the job just as well if not better

Isn't life grand. Your opinion is that they're good, and do the job as well as other makes, my opinion is different.

And if you class 90K and a turbo replacement as perfectly acceptable, you have a very different idea to mine of what constitutes 'good'. I've had plenty of 'more fancycars' which have done much, much more mileage than that on original turbos, both petrol and diesel.

A cars job is to get you from A to B. Sorry but I don't need a fancy badge for that. Some other cars maybe faster but whats the point o public roads with speed limits? m y car is just as capable of doing 70 mph plus as any other car. some other cars may have all the bells and whistles but I bet you most people don't need or use half of those gadget gimmicks. as long as it has a radio, a/c, comfortable seats and power steering im fine thank you.

Neither do I, but I fail to understand why you have such an issue with someone disagreeing with you on whether or not a Vauxhall is good?

And now you're arguing that other cars might be faster, as if that matters. Only a few posts ago you were saying your Corsa was fast when no-one else had brought performance into the equation - YOU were the poster who wanted to make performance into an issue. You need to decide which side of the fence you're going to argue from.

I don't really understand what you're disagreeing with here, I've simply pointed out that just because you think Vauxhalls are good, that doesn't mean we all have to agree with you; neither does it mean we all want to drive Ferraris.

I've been just as happy with my Triumph, Volkswagen, Fords, Mitsubishi, Renaults, Nissan, Mazdas, Subarus, Skodas, Volvos, Jeeps, Peugeots, Citroens, Rovers, Fiats and Saabs as I have my BMWs and Audi. I don't give two hoots about what badge is on the front, I buy a car to do the job I need it to do at that point in time.

Petrol car has been sold! So no point debating, however, I would like people's view on this:

Evans Halshaw would give service and mot.

Looks like a perfectly pleasant Focus to me. Cheap to run, easy to get bits for, nicely screwed together.

Don't let EH sell you ANY extra guff, forget their overpriced warranty which isn't worth the paper it's printed on (like all aftermarket warranties), and don't pay their £99 admin charge (IT IS OPTIONAL and offers you NOTHING).

Make sure everything works, get them to put in writing on the purchase invoice everything they say they will do to the car before you pick it up, and don't leave without two keys, all the original (no duplicate) service books and handbooks.

It's probably a perfectly good, honest car - just be wary of EH, as they are generally considered to be absolutely f???ing awful.
