In this instance, a decent dispensing optician would have ensured what was being dispensed would be fit for purpose before accepting the order.

Not sure what you mean. Do you mean ask me what I want them for?

I phoned Asda today and they said the fault probably lies with Specsavers, who will have to re-test me free of charge. Phoned Specsavers and they said bring in the prescription and the spectacles and see the dispenser.

I have a horrible sick feeling of anxiety in my stomach now. I can see myself having to have a big fight with someone and I am not sure I am up to it :-(

Yup, if they were mainly for VDU use, they should have explained all the options open to you and offered you occupational varifocals.

    There's three possibilities:
    1. The prescription is wrong. In this case you need to chase Specsavers.
    2. The glasses are not made to the prescription. In this case you need to chase Asda.
    3. All is well, and the glasses just don't suit you. In this case there's nothing you can do.

Wait till you visit Specsavers, see which of these three it is, and then see what you can do about it.

No far more likely to be a dispensing issure

who will have to re-test me free of charge

    No have about it

Fair play to specsavers they are certainly under no obligation to do this

^^ Most sensible response on the thread.

Incidentally, I have varifocals. From Asda. And use a computer all day & evening too!

The case is resolved. Turns out the assistant at Asda was just an unqualified shop assistant who should not have been taking my order because, well, she isn't properly trained. It's not her fault.

The qualified person at Specsavers explained all this to me. I should have been given occupational varifocals. She was not at all surprised that I could not see through the specs Asda made for me... they are simply reading glasses at the bottom and clear at the top (for distance).

Asda has now offered me a complete refund. However, I have to go 15 miles to the shop in person to get the refund, even though I paid by credit card so they could just refund the card - they won't. So that's another £11 in bus fares to take them back, plus I am still left with no new specs.

    This is ALL Asda's fault.

    Nedmundo was correct.

It was a false economy to refuse Specsavers more expensive specs in favour of Asda's. Three 30-mile round trips costs £33 in bus fares and I still have no specs. It's not right, is it?
  • wow £11 for a 15 mile trip is obscene where do you live? i ask because i am a bus driver and a day ticket only costs £6.50 here in kent

Whoops I almost never use buses and didn't enquire if there was a day ticket. Maybe there is!
