Am really surprised that a member of MSE staff is encouraging us to waste precious resources on something so unnecessary.
I couldn't agree more!:T
This is just another catchpenny racket we seem to have imported from America. It also encourages kids to be a nuisance banging on doors, in addition to doing so for Bonfire Night. Fortunately we depart for the Canaries that day so will be cruising down the English Channel when it is all happening.:dance:We're gonna be alright, dancin' on a Saturday night:dance:0 -

Halloween (Samhain) is a festival that has been celebrated since before Christianity, never mind the existence of the USA.Proud member of the wokerati, though I don't eat tofu.Home is where my books are.Solar PV 5.2kWp system, SE facing, >1% shading, installed March 2019.Mortgage free July 20230 -
We shall be celebrating Samhain at home, just the two of us and the elderly dog who will be staying with us that week.
No tat, no plastic garbage, definitely no "trick or treat" stuff.
We shall, as always, do a ritual cleansing of the bungalow, where we each grab a broom and sweep up any negativity that may be lurking around and literally sweep it out of the door.:oIf your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)0 -

Maybe it was by a few oddballs. It was never celebrated at all when I was at school. It has clearly become mainstream through this 'trick or treat' nonsense which is surely American.
It doesn't matter to us though as we shall be on holiday. I see there are cheap pumpkins in Aldi though - I may buy one to make some soup next week.:dance:We're gonna be alright, dancin' on a Saturday night:dance:0 -

I think it is regional. It was certainly celebrated when I was young (1960's). No pumpkins then though, we used to hollow out large turnips (swedes to Southerners) instead. Horrible smell when the candle was lit.
Trick or treating is a new import. Guising is similar traditional activity but a lot less akin to demanding money with menaces.0 -

Hi!
It's not that surprising, MSE's about helping people save money whatever they spend it on
We don't encourage people to take out Payday Loans at all but some people do... so we wrote a Payday Loan guide on it for the people who feel you really have to do it.
We don't tell people what they should and shouldn't do because everyone's different. We just help save people money on what they choose to spend it on.Could you do with a Money Makeover?

Why are people being so rude to Andrea? If you're not interested, then don't bother posting.
Thanks for posting Andrea. We have no plans yet, but may go to the local pub: they are having a fancy dress party there.
No worries, I've had worse and everyone's entitled to an opinion, it's how they choose to put that opinion across that matters
I'm just happy if we've saved even one person some money. Every little....

Thought "Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom" was too much of a mouthful.
I'm particularly looking forward to the Universal Studio's Halloween Horror Night, which is billed as being unsuitable for anyone under 13:

MSE isn't about not spending- It's about getting the best value .
We have a motoring board. Most people can walk so should we not have a motoring board ? If someone is going to drive anyway then it's good to have a resource that helps them get the best value.
Personally Halloween is one big yawn to me but if people want to celebrate it I'd rather they were able to do it more economically -I feel much the same about Christmas. It's one day -with a big roast and the Christmas chatter thread with people planning from January boggles my mind - but we are all different and get different things from MSE.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

Guising is an old Scottish tradition that was taken to the States by folk emigrating. There it evolved to the American trick or treat.
So yes today will be lots of sweets and nuts for the kids who come round dressed up and do their "turn" of a joke, song or whatever.
It's a fun tradition for us and the kids have a great time.
My English friends tell me it can be like money with menaces down there .0
