At 21 I came to this country, my husband and I married and we bought an ex-municiple semi-detached home in Birmingham. Five years later we moved to a little semi-detached cottage in Knowle, Solihull with coved ceilings and little windows. Five years further on, we moved north to Lancs to a home I announced "they'll carry me out of in a box". That was 28 years and eight months ago. Now 59. The house is too large for us now to be honest, but we manage the garden and upkeep.
In the meantime during those almost 29 years here in the North I've had eight rented properties to stay in during the week while working away from home (incl two in S Africa and one on the Isle of Mann), but they were just digs and not home.“And all shall be well. And all shall be well. And all manner of things shall be exceeding well.”

I got some good advice from a friend many years ago. "do it once and do it right" as he explained the amount of money it had cost him in fees / duty / solicitors and decorating going from a shared flat to a flat to a bigger flat to a terrace to a semi to a detatched as his needs/family grew.
I can understand it if you move around the country a lot, but I know a couple of people (including my best friends parents) hwo have moved "around the corner" to a similar size house. Literally 100 meters!
Each to their own, but I just can't get my head around that!
• The rich buy assets.
• The poor only have expenses.
• The middle class buy liabilities they think are assets.0
