Sneaky Windows 10

Been away for a few days so might have missed a thread about this. Whilst away tried to shut down laptop (currently on Windows 7)only to have that annoying "install updates and then shut down" despite me setting Windows to download and let me choose when to install. Whilst working our how to shut down without installing updates (it was nearly beer o'clock) I noticed that "Get Windows 10" icon and I have previously uninstalled the 3035...... update that causes it and hidden it. I had to do a hard shutdown as it wouldn't let me shut down without getting Windows 10. Thankfully I sorted it ............. and no beer was spilled.

Just returned home only to find the same situation on my main PC. What is Microsoft doing? My PC is also set to download and let me choose, yet once again it has forced the installation of the Get Windows update. Once again I have uninstalled and hidden the update. Anybody else had the same recent issue? If it has been covered since Thursday last, just point me at the thread. Cheers.

I have now, thanks BUT, like every other setting, I thought I had set it up correctly.

Cheers folks, this prompted me to check, and KB3035583 had appeared again.
I'm also always set to 'Inform me' only.
    Move along, nothing to see.

we look forward to your future posts about how to remove all the viruses you've been infected with due to this setting.

"Patch release"-to-"exploit in the wild" times are shorter than ever these days... especially if you're doing dodgy stuff like 'using the internet to visit websites'....

JasX Can you explain a little more please? Am I leaving myself open to Microsoft updates containing viruses? I only have the setting for Microsoft Windows updates, not viruses or other spurious downloads.

Anyway, despite being set for "download and let me choose", whenever I see updates are available, I click on them to install and the first thing that happens is that system goes away to download. Shouldn't that already be done if I have set to "download and let me choose"?

You can patch exploits to death but you can't patch PEBKAC:

I'll just download and run this codec I need for this video to play that happens to be an EXE and being logged in with full user admin privileges will help it install correctly.

I did notice that Windows 10 wanted to download onto my machine the other night (as an "important" update). I've unticked it but not hidden it for now.
I've had annoying icon in the taskbar but I'm ignoring it for now.

I think there's another thread about the sizeable download but that is very sneaky!

Any posts are my opinion and only that. Please read at your own risk.

Basically on a regular schedule microsoft release a batch of security patches for every machine running windows (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patch_Tuesday)

At this point you hackers will generally line up to pick over microsoft's security releases and the holes they're designed to fix. Basically they get an information dump along the lines of 'here is a security hole *every single* computer in the world running windows (ish) is vulnerable to and will remain vulnerable to until they apply this months patch. To a computer hacker this can be referred to as "Christmas" and potentially comes every month (depending on the severity and content of the official security patches).

Malware authors will then race to push code into compromised websites, phishing emails, semi-legitimate downloads etc that exploit this months security holes. They can appear within hours.

Hence as soon as microsoft release security patches -> you really want them, and want them installed asap. You're not helping yourself asking microsoft to wait for you to decide if you want to close this months security holes at your own leisurely pace... unless you are running a critical 24/7 operation using unusual and highly specialist software....

The same applies to major applications and particularly your browser (eg Adobe reader, Chrome, etc) these days major suppliers do thoroughly test security patches before they get to you and more than ever you want to be updating quickly....
