I have roughly got 85 points going through all cryteria. In terms of DLA and IB, where does 85 get me?

Just what is the points threshold...?!

To satisfy the PCA it is 15 points for physical incapacity, or 10 points for any mental health incapacity. If someone has both, it's 15 points.
More info about the PCA is here-

Each prescriptor has a number of levels with points awarded for each level. If you find that in each prescriptor you match several of the sections you will be awarded the highest one. You will not get all the points of each of the prescriptor.

The number of points required to be classed as inacapable of work is 15 for Physical and 9 for Mental.

If this is true then the most you can ever possibly score for mental disability is 8 unless I've missunderstood something.
  • thanks i just worked out 28 points for my son with aspergers
he gets dla but when he leaves college his ema will stop...might be worth applying then.

From the information given it certainly looks like that!

Can anyone clarify? Otherwise if this is the case no-one would qualify on mental health grounds alone!

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton

There is a whole section there on Mental Health problems, it is not just completion of tasks but also coping with pressure, interaction with other people and Daily Living, I have looked but for the life of me I cannot work out why you would think it only comes to 8 points as there is many more than this mentioned. How did you just get 8 points?

Very interesting, food for thought. By those criteria I wouldn't get IB and I've got cancer! Perhaps I should become an alcoholic, they get more points than I do  The only points I get would be for my hearing loss, and that's never stopped me working!

But having cancer doesn't necessarily affect the things you can do, which is what matters here.

At least this should stop people worrying about how hard it's going to be to claim in future!
  • bluemonkey, because sombody said earlier in the thread that you can only be scored on one criterion in each section - there are four sections and the most you can get on each one is two points.

That cannot be the case because the criteria is so different within the section.

    Interaction with other people
    Descriptor Points

a Cannot look after themselves without help
    from others 2
b Gets upset by ordinary events and it results
    in disruptive behavioural problems 2
c Mental problems impair ability to communicate
    with other people 2
d Gets irritated by things that would not have
bothered them before they became ill 1
e Prefers to be left alone for six hours or more
    each day 1
f Is too frightened to go out alone 1

You see, someone could have all of these things, which one do they think is the most important? I can see this from the above section on how people get about but not within the mental health catagory.
