Broadband not broad enough!

I need some advice please about the correct terminology and so on to use when going back to my isp about this. Basically the problem is that if 2 of us at home want to go online (via wifi) at the same time, whoever gets there first gets access. So for example, if my granddaughter is watching youtube make-up videos on her ipad, I can't get any sort of access to the internet on my laptop, or my phone. It just hangs and hangs and waits and waits. Another example which I assume is the same thing, is that if I watch a live webcam on one site I like for birdwatching, I can't also have another tab open for planes on Flightradar, which I also like. In fact Flightradar is often tricky on its own, I imagine it's heavy on bandwidth.
What am I talking about here and how do I either check for myself if I'm getting the max of whatever myself or call Plusnet, my provider. Other families have several kids online at once, plus online tv and goodness knows what else. I hear about superfast but I think once I'm on it's perfectly fast enough, there just isn't enough of it!!!
Thanks
DS

you need to get into the router interface and post your line stats, i.e. sync speed up/down, noise margin up/down and line attenuation up/down, along with a couple of speedtest results, then it can be ascertained if your line is working as it should or not..........Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -
you need to get into the router interface
How do I do that? Is that the process in the link above? I've done a quick speed test as in the first link in bsod's post and get .94 download and .38 upload. I've done it a couple of times and get similar, give or take a couple each way.
A start anyway, thanks very much. I'll persist with the other ideas. I should be grateful as I live in an area where lots of people can't get broadband at all. Or mobile phone signal.0 -
from a web browser, the url depends which router it is

do a speedtest and check sync speeds using the test socket if you have one, as it rules out any issues with extension wiring

Oh gosh, sorry, it was a straightforward list when I sent it. Now very garbled. Will try and sort it all out. And how did that little clapping face get into the middle of it. Oh dear, so sorry!0

The very first thing I would do is connect your laptop to the router with an Ethernet cable and test the speed from there. This gives an accurate reading without throwing wifi into the mix.
The speeds you posted are absolutely shocking and its no wonder you are struggling.
Make sure the router is connected to the main telephone socket in the house and that it has a filter between it and the wall socket.
Post what speeds you get, and further advice will follow

reboot (off and on) the router, and check again
then try test socket
448 upload / 1,344 download these speeds are slow presumably because you're miles away from the exchange? It's unlikely to be anything to do with wirelessDon't you dare criticise what you cannot understand0 -

Ring you ISP and complain. You are getting 0.4 Mbps download speed0
