I don't wish to renew with them as they are quoting £300 more than last year , so I cancelled my direct debit just incase they try renewing the policy

If you are on auto-renew, have you actually advised them that you do not want to renew with them?
Cancelling a direct debit does not cancel a contract
Does it say anything in the paperwork re cancelling a direct debit?
Had you advised them that you were not renewing with them and they attempted to take a payment through the direct debit scheme you would have been entitled to it being refunded

I got a letter stating they were cancelling my policy early because the direct debit had been cancelled .....
You need to take robust action over this as (apart from apparently now being uninsured) a cancelled policy goes on your record for life and normally insurers ask if you (or anyone on your policy) have ever had a policy cancelled by an insurer.

Obviously don't drive till you have cover elsewhere and do tell your new insurer about the cancellation.
