BT want to charge me £55 to leave

Hi folks,
I'm currently with BT for phone and broadband, they attracted me on a good deal because i'd never normally touch them as they are so expensive.
Anyway my BT contract ends on 30/10/15 and after that it will shoot up in price so I planned to leave. When I saw Martin's e-mail this week with the great EE broadband deal, I decided to go for it. Only problem was the deadline for applying for that was today so I applied and am due to switch around 20th October.
Anyway I have now received an e-mail from BT to say they are going to charge me £55 for my "free" BT Homehub because I am leaving mid-contract.
Now if I had left after 1 month or something and they needed to re-coup the cost of the hub then fair enough. But I am leaving 10 blinking days early yet they are still trying to charge me £55....
Add to that, I paid my phone line rental for 1 year upfront so i'm not leaving the phone contract early as they have already said they won't refund the up front phone line rental. So all they are "losing" from me leaving 10 days early is (1/3 of £2.50) = £84p.....
Is there any way around this other than cancel my EE switch and wait the extra 10 days?
