Applying For Pip Whilst Receving JSA

My partner is 60 and has been unemployed for 4 years, and is currently receiving JSA. She has been constantly turned down for jobs because of her poor health, one problem being rheumatoid arthritis, as well as others. I think she should go on to sickness benefit, but I realise this is not as straight forward as it once was. I have suggested she apply for PIP, but she thinks if she does her JSA will be stopped immediately, even before a decision is made whether she gets it or not. Does anyone know if this is the case?

No her JSA will not be stopped if she applys for PIP. Many people work and get it.

PIP is not means tested and it is an in work benefit, therefore there is no reason why she cannot make a claim for PIP and continue getting JSA.
  • Thanks for the replies. Is it true that if she received PIP she would still have to sign on every 2 weeks?

Yes if she still wants to get JSA. Getting pip doesn't change the JSA criteria. It's additional to JSA, not a replacement.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Being granted PIP may also in some cases add premiums to JSA.
  • So, does this mean she still has to search for a job?

If she is unfit for work, she may be able to claim ESA.

It's not extra benefits she is after, and she cannot apply for ESA if she is receiving JSA.
