i haven't been able to look because of anxiety. i take money out of atm, and its been fine and i don't buy much stuff. but i just feel ill the idea of looking at my statements. This is probably very unusual and not a safe thing to do? i m going to look at them tomorrow but i feel that i should drink first

Do you have more money going in than coming out? If so it should be fine. Delaying won't make it any better or worse, just do it, and I'd suggest lining the drink up for afterwards so that you're compos mentis while checking.
It's not that unusual for people not to check their statements, you don't have to hang around this board for long to realise that, but you are right that it's not safe to ignore it, many of us (including me) have found a fraudulent transaction simply by checking statements on a regular and frequent basis.0 -

thankyou, yes fraudulent transactions is one of the things i'm worried about. I don't use my card much at shops, but it still worries me, since i do have some savings- but then just could not look at my statements even though i know i'm not in dept. if something bad happens can the bank get your money back?0 -
I check my bank accounts several times a day. Once in the morning and then once in the late afternoon/evening when transactions tend to update and show on the statement.
How on earth have you gone over 12 months without checking? :O0 -

It's better late than never, but the difficulty you may face is not remembering what you did 12 months ago so not being sure whether a transaction is valid or not. That's why checking at least when the statement is generated each month is a good idea, and if your account is online then checking more frequently isn't a bad idea (although only a small proportion will go quite as far as lee does).0 -
What are you afraid of seeing? You obviously have money in there (or an authorised overdraft) otherwise you wouldn't be able to take money out of the ATM.
Have a look tomorrow, check all is OK and then make it your mission to check every day (or every week). Its not scary and if something untoward does happen, its better to find out and sort it sooner rather than later.
Good luck!

I;m sure there is a counselling service out there for people who have a phobia at looking at their bank statements. :rotfl:0
