  • I use 250gms mince for Spag bol/cottage pie etc, for 3 of us & half a chicken breast per person. All my meals are bulked out with extras. When we have a lodger & serve a bowl of salad & home made bread with every meal.

  • I'm trying to sort out the portion thing too as my DP can eat for England (and he's still like a string bean!) and however much i make he can eat so i take out any portions for the freezer before serving. Also he nearly always wants seconds so i now serve him a smaller portion to start with so he can go back and get more because before he was still going back even though i'd given him a big portion to start with!

I stretch mince out with lentils, onions, mushrooms etc so a 450g packet made into bolognese will do for me, DP, DD (5) and 2 smaller sized portions for lunches with jacket potatoes. I use chicken in curries and casseroles but bulk out with extra veg, as long as there is plenty of food overall DP doesn't notice the lack of meat.

I find winter food like soups, stews and casseroles cheaper to make because i can bulk them up with lots of veg and less meat but we still get decent sized portions. I can't be doing with fiddling little meals lol, i love my food and lots of it! :D

    good afternoon everyone

I am just about getting my portions under control..well mostly :o

My hubby has told me for the 5 years we have been married that my portions are to big :o ...okay so i am prone to making "gut busters" and having been raised to eat whats on my plate.....that has never gone away:mad: ....

I have just started measuring out the pasta with one of those things with different sized holes in for 1/2/3/4 people and have now figured that 3/4 cup of rice is plenty for my hubby by the time its cooked...

at one time i would have made a 500g pack of minced steak into a shepherds pie etc for 2 :rotfl: :rotfl: i now use load of veggies so i can still have a decent portion, but save money n calories at the same time:j

  • i will use a 500g packet of mince, and bulk it out with veg - onions, carrots, celery, mushrooms, peppers and courgettes.

I usually make a enough to feed 2 adults and 2 children, twice, so 8 portions and sometimes have enough leftover to have on jacket potatoes for a lunch.

    We NEVER weigh anything :o

    I wouldn't have a clue.

My husband buys a huge bag of mince from the farm and divides it up into bags for the freezer. Neither of us have any idea how much each bags weigh. Anyway, one bag feeds husband & 2 teenage girls - sometimes there's another portion left.

OMG- thats all so vague its pathetic :o:o

We are really bad - we never weigh anything. Maybe we wouldn't be chunky monkeys if we weighed things :rotfl:
Sometimes it's important to work for that pot of gold...But other times it's essential to take time off and to make sure that your most important decision in the day simply consists of choosing which color to slide down on the rainbow...

    Thanks again everyone.

I've been trying to look at portion sizes for a while as trying to lose weight. I have reduced my portions but not enough!! lol I think its hard to judge how much we should eat. I know there are guidelines but they tend to be black and white and I've not seen anything that gives you a guide on meat in sauces ie Spaghetti Bolognese, Cottage/ Sheperds pie, Stew, Beef Stroganoff, Chicken a la king etc.

Its interesting to see how much other people eat. Although I don't think my diet is bad as I do try to eat alot of veg (not so good on the fruit) it seems on the whole we do eat way too much meat and carb portions.
  • Last night DH arrived home from watching the footie, having called in to Asda. He produced 4 packs of their Beef Mince yellow stickered to 19p!!!!!!! Obviously 3 went straight into the newly defrosted freezer and one into soon to be defrosted fridge for tonight. I am in the middle of cooking chilli and it is a 500 gram pack. I intend to split into 2 x 2 portions and 1 x single portion. I reckon by the time the kidney beans are added and then served with rice this should be a reasonable enough meal. I know that 450 grams equates to the old addage of a 1lb for four meal. I am not skimping am I?

    Hi grannybroon,

I think that's about right. If I'm making a chilli for the five of us (including two teens who eat more than I can) I would use 500-600g mince. As you say it will be padded out with tinned tomatoes, mushrooms, kidney beans etc and served with rice.

For more ideas on what others use have a look at this recent thread:

I'll merge your thread with that one later to keep all the replies together.

  • Is that 5 portions then GB ? I'd make a lb of mince serve my family of 5- yougest doesn't eat much but I reckon 500g will be fine for 5 portions with the beans too ;)

I made chilli last night with a 500g pack of mince and divided it into four but found that the portions were quite large-it would easily have seved 5.
