Meal Portions

Out of curiosity when doing meals like, spaghetti Bolognese, Cottage Pie how much Mince do you use. We use 500g of mince for 2 Adults and 2 kids (3yo and 22mths) Am trying to lose weight and trying to cut cost but can't seem to get below £60-£70 per week. So wondering whether we are actually eating too much?!

Thanks

  • We did ww 4 yrs ago, and that radically changed my approach to portion sizes. We aren't as strict as we were, but we could never go back to the large portions we were having.

Nowadays, for spag bol, I use 250g mince for 2 adults and one 5yo (with a good appetite), I also use 250 g spagetti.

add to that, 1 or 2 onions, tomato sauce, other veg (esp courgette) cut finely to bulk out and increase veg portions...

I use 250g for 4 portions - so when it's just me, I eat one and freeze 3. I use mushrooms to bulk it out.

I use the same amount for 2 adults and 2 kids also. I pad it out with onions mushrooms and any veg i have handy.

I am trying to be careful with my weight too, so i do another portion of veg, ie runner beans and put in my dish only and mix it all together, i do less pasta for me also.

I use 400g lamb mince to feed 5 adults, spag bol is supposed to be more a pasta-and-tomato-sauce dish than a meat one! If I use a shop-bought sauce I add extra tomato puree and a quarter jar of water to make it go further!

I use half a pack of mince (about 250g?) to make spag bol, and bulk it out with lentils, mushrooms, grated carrots and courgettes. This usually gives me six portions - usually two of spag bol and a big four portion lasagne, or four of spag bol and a smaller lasagne.
  • I use a 500g pack of steak mince (I think the steak mince goes further, less fat) and add loads of tinned tomatoes, carrots, onions, peppers, sweetcorn, mushrooms, any other suitable veg available. I does serve 4 of us for two days. The kids hate the fact that I fill it out with veg, but they do eat it. If there's not quite enough for day 2, because hubby's taken a lot extra, I just grill a couple of sausages to have with it.

I use 500g of beef mince and add 100g of dried soya mince. Out of this I get 9 meals for 2 people, which I freeze.

I use the size of mince that is 70p-ish at Tesco (probably rubbish I know!) for two adults and leftovers. Always add loads of veg eg mushrooms, onion, peppers, grated carrot...

I am way too generous to my lot!

I have lodgers and cook for them. For mince dishes, I use 200g each (i.e. a 800g pack from Tesco will feed 4 people, although I must say if all 5 of us are at home, this stretches to five).

My bf is obsessed with meat.

I use 450g pack to make 6 portions and then sometimes add lentils to stretch it to 8.

However I usually add peas/s corn in with spag bol and s/pie - as well as grated carrots sometimes - more veg smuggled into the kids - and the lentils seem to be hidden by the carrots - so far ;)
