Mince I pad out, when doing chilli or spag bol, chunky diced carrots, onion, sweetcorn
I'd say a 500g bag of mince would do both of us for 2 dinners0 -
I use 1 lb (454g) for 2 adults and 3 kids aged 7, 10 and 12. I have noticed though that it's beginning to seem a little stretched as eldest's appetite is increasing and youngest is also eating more.0

It depends what im cooking but generally 500g goes to 4-6 portions for an adult. Ive been cutting down what I have and find serving in small breakfast bowls means it looks like im eating more!0

I use 250g of minced lamb for Shepherds Pie and pad out with a tin of baked beans. This will do 5 largish servings and I freeze 1-2 portions as theres just 3 of us.

Bit OT but I heard recently that a portion of carbs should be about the size of your fist and a portion of meat should be about the size of the palm of your hand... Unless you have freak-sized hands!0

Thanks everyone.. I guess we are eating too much. Problem is we have Big plates and Bowls so I guess we pile it on as otherwise it looks like nothing. Am planning on changing them soon, so that will help. Also decided that I will halve our current portions and freeze it for another meal.
So I have another question - How much chicken breast, rice, pasta and potatoes do you use per person, got a feeling I go over here too.
Thanks again!0 -
I'm not entirely sure, as I batch cook bolognese, but 2x the large Tesco Value packs of mince (think they're 800g each) makes enough to freeze 7 or 8 portions for hubby and I, but the recipe I have has celery, onion an carrot in it and if they're in the cupboard I add mushrooms, but if it's for cottage pie it tends to be a 250g pack between the 2 of us0

I use 500g for 2 adults and 3 children 8-5-3 but i buy the big packs of 1100g and 1/2 it and us that for 3 adults and 5 kids when my sister comes over. My husband is a big eater too. The 500g only does us as my son 3 only has a teaspoon of meat and sauce on his as he wont eat it so if he starts to eat it will have to get more.Still TryingGrocery challenge July 2016

i do 3 large chicken breasts or 4 smaller for us 5 in a curry or stew etc.
for roasted i do a pack of 4 quarters and a pack on mixed drumsticks and thighs, i dont eat veg so i do eat more meat. ut with this there is left overs which i then use the next day for kids lunches or hubby will snack on the next day when he gets home from work.
Beef for stews etc i use about 400g pack or whatever they come in but again kids dont eat that much of this they have more veg.
pork chops large ones i would need 5 2x DH 1x me and 2 cut up between the 3 kids

I use 200gms mince or chicken for 1 adult and 2 teenagers age 17yrs and 13yrs.
I also cook a whole chicken and weigh it into 200gm portions, and freeze ,its sounds very little. But since I have started doing this no one has noticed!!
I put a tin of toms in the with the mince or chicken and other vegetables and 1 onion. Occasionally I slice potatoes on top and cover with grated cheese yum!
I serve this in small curvy bowls, they look full, and then they can have seconds,so they thinks its loads.SPC £500 well will try very hard.
