Travel Republic - Hit or Miss??

Thank you for all your replies....I went ahead and booked with Travel Republic, and additionally paid (deposit only) by credit card for extra protection.
Just actually discovered (via MSE) that I only have to book the deposit by credit card (as long as it's over £100 which is is) to be covered by the Section 75 thing...so that will save me the extra credit card 2% charge for subsequent payments.
My other question involves travel insurance. Just read this on MSE:
"Most travel insurance policies are designed to cover package holidays, as historically that's how 90% of us booked our holidays, and not all providers have kept up. This leaves them ill-equipped to cover DIY trips, where flights and accommodation are booked separately.
The biggest issue is a lack of cover for knock-on consequences. If a policy covers scheduled airline failure, for example, and the airline goes under, you'll typically be able to claim for the flights and any consequential losses, such as hotel costs. Without this cover, you'll lose the money you paid for it.
To beat this, you need a policy that specifically covers 'indirect loss' or 'scheduled airline failure'. Check the small print as some insurers include this cover as standard, while with others it is an optional extra.
Remember, packaged holidays feature extra ATOL and ABTA protection, which you don't get on DIY trips. If you're booking a DIY trip, if the additional fee isn't too expensive, book with a credit card (repaid in full to avoid interest) and then you get Section 75 protection for anything costing over £100"
I assume having booked a Travel Republic holiday (flights, accommodation and transfers) that this is still considered a "DIY holiday" as referenced above?
If so, all I'm getting from the above info is alarm bells ringing that insurers haven't kept up with the fact that people no longer always book package holidays...but I'm confused what I have to do to ensure I'm properly covered like I would be with any normal package holiday insurance?
Any help to clarify?? (sorry for sounding so stupid!)0 -
I've booked a few holidays with them - never had an issue. Used them to book hotels for a US visit next year and saved a fortune compared to other sites!0

@#12
If you booked two or more holiday components with TR then you should have ATOL cover as a Flight+ arrangement. They have added items together to create a 'package'. You will have probably paid an ATOL free on your holiday cost breakdown and should receive an ATOL certificate from TR shortly after booking. This arrangement is different from a DIY holiday.0 -
I've found Alpharooms to be consistently a few quid cheaper than Travel Republic, and never had any problems.
As always with these sites though, I would only ever book the hotel with them. Always book flights direct with the Airline(s).0 -
For Med destinations Sunshine are (often) the cheapest. They aren't on comparison sites that I know of. Alpharooms aren't on many either.
However I have booked plenty of hotel rooms thru Travel Republic and all has been fine.
My loyalty is only to my wallet, so like for like, its who ever is cheapest over all.
However for a 1 night stay for instance, Rocketmiles or Kaligo may be marginally more expensive, but if you are getting say 4000 bonus Avios, it may be worth an extra 20 quid or less0
