Proof please that people have died from diesel fumes?
Plenty of models and stats have proven this. You can even download open source models and play with them - see how many extra people you can kill by different emissions policies. Different groups have independently estimated that in the region of hundreds will have directly died due to the cheat being in place.

Interestingly - it was discussed at length last week on costing the earth (R4) - the good news is that it doesn't affect me - it disproportionately affects the poorest families - the inner city dwellers. Not in my back yard!

I assume you mean in the open world and not proof that diesel fumes actually can kill people?

It isn't about direct deaths, it's about increasing levels of harmful particles into the air, which then cause health problems and in turn premature death. More people die prematurely from pollution in London than are killed in road traffic accidents.
  • It's not just diesel cars though is it, petrol cars pollute as well but all the blame is on VW and diesel cars. I bet other manufacturers diesel cars pollute as bad as VW.

Well, in real-world testing - according to the researchers on R4 last week - other manufacturers did worse. The point is that other manufacturers didn't cheat their certification. It's made VW an easy target.

Petrol engines produce less NOx emissions than diesel, but more CO2. Policy has been to reduce carbon emissions - but the flipside has been the dash for diesel has caused NOx pollution to rise above safe limits in a couple of non-significant locations in the UK.

As it only affects Greater London, the West Midlands, Greater Manchester, West Yorkshire, Teesside, the Potteries, Hull, Southampton, Glasgow, the East, the South East, the East Midlands, Merseyside, Yorkshire & Humberside, the West Midlands, and the North East - and as I'm nowhere near any of these I don't have to worry.

There is lots of proof including clinical studies.

Ever heard of NOX? What about particulates?

    BooHoo.

Maybe VAG shouldn't have fitted their cars with "cheat" software then.
