Altered advance flights

I booked a return flight with B.A. about 1 year in advance of the trip. About 3 months later B.A. informed me that the return flight will be delayed by about 6 hours. They told me I could alter my flight by either another flight on same day or a free change of day. So far so good! The result is that I did not want to fly 6 hours later and as this was the last flight that day I decided to take a flight the following day at a slightly earlier time. This has caused me extra expense:- an extra day car hire, hotel for extra night, an extra day car parking charge at home airport etc. B.A. stated that as they have given me over 2 weeks notice of alteration then they do not need to do anything else except refund my ticket (which is non-refundable) or offer an alternative flight. No compensation for additional costs etc.
