Most independant butchers and groceries have less than 250 staff, so can give you a free bag (as well as better quality produce IMHO)0

Here's a money saving idea: why not take a plastic bag you already possess to the supermarket, and put your fish/chicken/teapot in it?0

Probably best to pick up bags in veggie section and protect it in yourself...
Some shops may now frown on this action because of the new charge... I read somewhere on this board than one shop (can't remember which, have told customers they cannot do that!)nomoneytoday wrote: »Most independant butchers and groceries have less than 250 staff, so can give you a free bag (as well as better quality produce IMHO)
I agree, I was purchasing Chicken Breasts and Beef this morning in Tesco, and I did not wish to put them direct in my jute shopping bag. I had no suitable plastic bags to take and re-use. Since Tesco wanted me to pay 5p for a bag, I decided to leave them at the till and headed to the local butcher! Something I shall be doing from now on more often!0 -
If your meat was in a small plastic bag or wrapper the supermarkets do not give you any other bag unless you pay. But that is not how I read the legislation, I understand it to mean meat and chicken get bags due to high risk of leakage on to other goods. I did once get a bag for my chicken in tesco with no argument and free but certainly never for meat.
Ermmm Chicken is meat?

Hate to tell you this but Tesco,as an employer of more than 250 people have no choice in the matter whereas your butcher, who I doubt employs more than 250 people, does have a choice.
If you were in Wales you would have to pay regardless of where you shopped which makes the english rules a bit of a cop out0 -
An issue I had at Asda today was at the self service till, they wont give you any bags until you have swiped all of your shopping, so what are you supposed to do when the bagging area is full ?
Tesco ask how many bags you want before you start and they type it into the screen before you start.WWSD(what would Scooby Doo)0 -

They do have a choice, they make enough profit to give the bags away for free and cover the 5p cost themselves! I don't mind paying when I am caught without a bag, but I do think a bag should be free for meat products whether they are wrapped or not!0 -

Tesco delivery tonight and all meat was in red plastic bags- but not carriers with handles, just smaller square bags. Bags were roughly the small size as a magazine.0
