Free plastic bag for fresh meat

Visited Tesco yesterday for usual weekly shop and expected free plastic bag for fresh meat at checkout, seems not to be the case with Tesco even though the new regulations permit this. Anyone else had the same problem ?
Previously Tesco checkout staff always put fresh meat into a seperate plastic bag especially chicken which we all know has a high risk of bacteria on the outside of the packaging.

If your meat was in a small plastic bag or wrapper the supermarkets do not give you any other bag unless you pay. But that is not how I read the legislation, I understand it to mean meat and chicken get bags due to high risk of leakage on to other goods. I did once get a bag for my chicken in tesco with no argument and free but certainly never for meat.

Can't believe you got fresh meat and took it to the checkout counter without putting it in a bag?
  • I also noticed this in Tesco too with the fresh meat. I do not think I would like to buy fresh fish without the store putting this item in a bag.
  • So they just gave you meat without any protective cover?

They'll put in a sealed bag at the fish counter. What more do you want them to do?
  • I bought a ceramic teapot in Tesco and when I asked if it could be wrapped in either bubble wrap or tissue paper I was told NO she could only wrap it up in plastics bags which I would have to buy

I had my own hessian bags but the teepot needed protection - surely this isn't right

I've always read it as a free plastic bag, not a free full-sized carrier bag.

I read it to mean the bag that they wrap the fish or meat in when you buy it loose - not a separate carrier bag!

Meat/fish is wrapped at the counter in a flimsy protective bag. It is not a carrier bag.
Teapots- be careful handling it and you will be fine.

Probably best to pick up bags in veggie section and protect it in yourself...
