Using Megadrive with newish telly

It won't. But I haven't heard of any TVs that DON'T have the analogue tuner. Still useful for Magic Eye room distribution and mustn't cost much these days. S-Video and SCART inputs are coming off TVs as too old, but the analogue tuners seem to remain...
We've confirmed that OP has an analogue tuner (haven't we, OP?) So if the Megadrive is switched on, the right cable is being used, the switch on it is in the right place (if applicable), the TV should find it. If you want to try it manually it's at 36 on UHF...
Eh ? I think you need a crash course in AM and FM modulation.
New designs no longer contain the necessary decoding circuitry for analogue demodulation, it makes them cheaper to produce and besides it's obsolete.Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.0 -
Once again thank you for the replies.
The Megadrive is a Sega Megadrive ll 16 bit.
The television does have analogue on it according to the menu but I'm finding it hard to scan it (if that's the right word lol.
I can't see the back of the lounge television very easily but from what I can see it more or less looks the same but the lounge telly has a few more socket thingies lol.
This is the back of the television that I'm trying to connect the Megadrive to
And this is the aerial plug
My son had most of the games machines but the Megadrive was the only one I could get on with lol. When the 3d ones came out I was completely lost!!!!!!!0 -
As you have a Megadrive 2 (the RF modulator MK-1633-18 is for a Megadrive 2) as per Ringo's suggestion above get one of these for £5 off amazon: You have composite input available on that TV so it should be fine.

Thank you, just wondering why those connections worked with the other television?0

TV transmissions no longer work how they used to (analogue transmission) and the method that your Mega drive uses to interface with the TV (RF modulator) relied on this old method, it is now removed from modern TVs as the circuitry is no longer required as it has been superseded by digital video broadcast transmission. For a time TVs were supplied with an analogue and digital tuner but since then the analogue tuning circuits have been totally removed.Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.0 -
Typical lol. I ordered the cables, thought I'd try to see if I could get the television to scan for analogue channels and this time it worked. It found one analogue channel and the Megadrive was working lol. The picture wasn't as clear as it should be but was OK.0

i bought a lead off Ebay for under £2 delivered goes from back of MD to TV and attaches to the yellow/white outlets on TV
works a treat on my HD TV - runs through AV channel no need for tuning"If I know I'm going crazy, I must not be insane"0 -

Yes they do - as I said in my post, it's still useful for Magic eye and, you know, old games consoles. If I was buying a TV and really wanted the feature, I'd certainly make sure it's there and as you say I'm sure it could be phased out some time, but it must be really cheap to still include an analogue tuner. I've got 2 2014 TVs that I'm using it on (to view Sky in other rooms)
Please give me my crash course in AM and FM modulation (we're talking about UHF here BTW so why are you talking about radios?).it is now removed from modern TVs as the circuitry is no longer required as it has been superseded by digital video broadcast transmission
I'll give you removed from 'SOME' modern TVs - but I haven't encountered any, yet.For a time TVs were supplied with an analogue and digital tuner but since then the analogue tuning circuits have been totally removed.
Again, simply not true as a blanket statement.
Waterlily24 - Ah yes so your RF modulator confirms that it's 'broadcasting' on channel 36 UHF. A/V in goes to your Megadrive, plug your aerial into 'ANT IN' to pick up Freeview, and TV OUT goes to your TV.
If you're having trouble with the tuning, can you tell us the model number of your TV? All the information so far tells us this should work on both TVs, without spending extra money, and we just have to work out how to get the second TV tuned.Typical lol. I ordered the cables, thought I'd try to see if I could get the television to scan for analogue channels and this time it worked. It found one analogue channel and the Megadrive was working lol. The picture wasn't as clear as it should be but was OK.
Ah! Bingo! Hopefully you might still have time to cancel the order if it hasn't been packed yet...0 -

What utter tripe, what do you think the electromagnetic spectrum is ?
You really don't know what carrier wave modulation is do you ?
Your homework for today is to find out how the chroma and luminance signal is modulated in a UHF analogue broadcastAh! Bingo! Hopefully you might still have time to cancel the order if it hasn't been packed yet...
It's £5 well spent, you'll get a far better picture using composite. No further mucking about with RF.Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.0
