It's not the government charging the Energy Surcharge its the glass manufacturers (i know because i worked for one (the biggest one) Google it and you will see that the EU took some to court around 8 years ago as well, it was 4% when i first had to do it.

Cheers for the link, interesting reading how the companies were fixing the prices. The link doesn't mention the ESC specifically though. Looking into it further as you say the companies introduced it to negate the rise/fall in their energy costs which I guess made sense.

I presume you mean £11 sq mt for 4mm in sheet form?

Yes, I pay around £11-00 er sq metre but a minimum charge of 0.3 of a metre for anything under 0.3.

If that's an annealed DGU price today then prices have dropped 20% in 8 years.

Yes thats GDU price but this can fluctuate with different make ups of the units so self cleaning glass,Active Blue etc can make a difference to the cost as does Krypton,Xenon gas fill.

So are you doing more Aluminium,Upvc type work or still in the glass/glazing side of the industry?..

To be honest I don't know of any competitive online companies ,especially for a single unit.

Change the top hinges when your bottom unit is out and you wont struggle as much getting it off and back on . (2 people are better than on and you need a ladder to get the first unit out anyway) You might need to take the back pressure gasket out before the beads come off . The alternative is it was fitted with double sided tape . a little harder but not too much trouble with a stanley knife .If your glass is next to a bath or shower regardless how far off the floor its in a slipperble area and needs to be toughened glass (inside only if its upstairs). Its DIY able as its not very big my only thought is you as a DIYer will have to take the unit out to get the thickness right because the cavity spacerbars are different sizes . handles and hinges are like for like . Get universal ones unless your matching them up . I would expect to charge some one about half that price quoted . Materials are no more than £60 online or from your local shop etc .
 hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world

If you don't have the right tools You'll wreck the bead getting the unit out which will probably be double sided taped in anyway and is an absolute pain to sort. It's all good and well lookjng for the cheapest online quote but any window fitter will tell you that whatever the cost you always double it in case of breakages.
Sometimes it's just better to pay an expert to do it properly rather than you taking a whole day sorting it out.
    Up to you mate.
