New sealed unit cost

Options
Hi

Just looking to see if this is a decent price from a local guy who works in the window industry and does work in his own time

Bathroom sealed unit 1.0 x 0.4 privacy glass , with a new handle and a pair of 10" hinges for the smaller window above that have bent over time

£225 all in

Any good?

You know , i thought that , so i havent called him back , thanks for your reply
Problem is , round here , is finding someone that hasnt got windows to try to sell as well

The windows are externally beaded , is it a DIY`able job ?

    Cheers

Its not too difficult, pop the bead off measure the DGU and get a new one from a glass shop.

Handles tend to have the same fittings (into PVC frames) so most will fit (Google is your friend).

Hinges slightly different, sounds like 10 inch friction stays, very cheap but not the easiest things to fit to an already fitted window up a ladder.

Handle plus hinges £12 off eBay, DGU, £80 ish.

The sealed unit should be no more than £25-00 for a 4mm softcoat Low E unit ,Argon filled ,obscure glass...

Externally beaded ,don't you need to pull out the internal gasket to make room to pop the beads out?... I've very little experience with plastic...:D

You may well be right about the gasket, think your glass cost is a bit too skinny though.

I've only taken out externally beaded units a couple of times and even then It was still a struggle.. I would starve being a burglar..

I'm currently paying around £38-00 a sq metre for obscure,Low E units so you may be right but certainly not over £40-00.

I'm guessing your glass costs are trade? I know the current costs per sq mtr for sheets and DGU's straight off the line, i was being kind to the OP knowing what sort of mark up's some are after.

Yes thats trade price but if they shop around they may be able to get a decent price.. Back in 1997 I was paying £20-00 a sq metre for 4mm float glass and now pay £11-00 sq metre so my supplier back then (glazing company) were making a huge mark up on float and units..

The government now charges the "energy surcharge" which is about 6% and based on the weight of the glass (per kg) so when you add this and the vat then the government are really rooking the public.

A total of 26% tax on glass is a rip off.

It's not the government charging the Energy Surcharge its the glass manufacturers (i know because i worked for one (the biggest one) Google it and you will see that the EU took some to court around 8 years ago as well, it was 4% when i first had to do it.

i worked for one of those mentioned.

I presume you mean £11 sq mt for 4mm in sheet form? If you want to know the cost mt sq off a float line PM me, make your eyes water.

If that's an annealed DGU price today then prices have dropped 20% in 8 years.
