Sky Fibre Upgrade-Do I need their router ?

We already have Sky Broadband and a fairly recent Sky hub router.


I recently placed an upgrade order for Sky Fibre and was told I would need to pay £ 30 activation fee and I think a delivery charge for the equipment. I anticipated the equipment would be different to what I already had with them but it arrived today and looks exactly the same.


Should they not have known that I already had this equipment and they were therefore charging me for something I didn't need ?

Have you moved from ADSL to FTTC? ADSL generally uses a combined ADSL modem and router in the same box. FTTC generally uses a separate VDSL modem and a PPPoE router.

An ADSL modem router is not suitable for the router part of a "fibre" connection.

If you were on FTTC before then it seems unlikely you would have needed a new router, but Sky might integrate other stuff like on demand TV or something into their router for some products (I don't use them as my ISP so I have no idea of the precise details of their product or hardware).

Which Sky hub do you have? If it's the SR102 then it's suitable for both adsl and fibre. If it's the SR101 then only for adsl.

Possibly but for £6.95 I wouldn't complain. If anything goes wrong you have a spare router and it would cost more to get a new one.

In Sky's case it's a combined router for fibre.

They don't integrate On Demand stuff into the router. That's part of the Sky TV box.

I thought it was £ 6.95 for delivery of the router. I presumed the cost of the router was included in the activation fee

Yes it is for the delivery and you probably cannot get out of the activation fee no matter what it's for. Sometimes they will waive it if pushed but may be a bit late now.
