Do woodburners save you money?

My sweep never gets much dust and never any creosote. Like you I don't slumber and only burn dry wood. My chimney sweep is fairly cheap at £60. My neighbour was paying £85 until he changed to my sweep last year. I'd never not get it swept annually.
I'm afraid £65 isn't cheap. I pay only £40 and I'm in the 'expensive' SE. Anyone who pays £85 is just not trying.0 -
£45 for me and ours comes from 20 miles awayNever under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0

You are a bit out of touch. Heating oil is now as cheap, if not cheaper than gas.
I'm just going by a work collegue who reckons it's still much more expensive. I having GCH I have no personal experience. But if it's now as cheap as gas that makes logs about the most expensive form of heating you can get.0 -

It's £60 and i never said it was cheap I'm happy with the service and the price I pay for it.
My original point was getting the chimney swept is another cost you have to add on for comparisons.0 -

We sweep our two chimneys twice a year. The only cost we had to pay out for were the set of brushes for about £20.
The chimney sweep we used before sweeping ourselves charged £35 and he recommended that chimneys should be swept 3 times a year.*3.36 kWp solar panel system,10 x Ultima & 4 x Panasonic solar panels, Solaredge Inverter *Biomass boiler stove for cooking, hot water & heating *2000ltr Rainwater harvesting system for loo flushing *Hybrid Toyota Auris car *RIP Pingu, Hoppy, Ginger & Biscuit *Hens & Ducks* chat thread. http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.php?t=52822090 -

Compared with electricity? Or bottled LPG?
That said, logs are now getting to be quite an expensive option, as is smokeless fuel. Thanks, 'lifestyle' magazines.0 -

A litre of oil contains 10.2kWh. The price of a litre of oil has been close to 30p for the last couple of months so that is approx. 3p/kWh - about the same as gas.0 -
I spend around £150 a year on wood cut my gas bill by about £450 per year 4 years back so it payed for its self in around 3 years, I fitted it and get everything at a good price, it heats a poorly insulated 50s bungalow to 20-22C even in the coldest times, so it was an easy decision for me, not everyones the same.0

Fair enough, but you did seem to be a bit negative. Some of us _do_ save money, and I was just explaining how. Mind you, I'm also glad that other people think your sweep is expensive! :-)0 -

I said if you have to buy seasoned logs you won't save money. If you have free wood you will save money. Very few people are lucky enough. I get as much free wood as I can get my hands on. But the vast majority I have to buy unfortunately.0
