BT Cancellation

I've recently cancelled my BT Broadband and phone package. I agreed a cancellation date of 6th Oct but was told I still have to give them 30 days notice, which meant I will be paying for services up to 28th Oct. Am I wrong in thinking I should have access to the services up to 28th Oct, as it appears my broadband has been switched off. With any other company you normally keep all services until the notice period had finished. I'm not sure if BT are trying to pull a fast one here.

No, you agreed the cancellation date. If say you had been moving house on the 6th, not cancelling the the services would have meant the new owners having access to the them at your expense, and the possibility of incurring charges that you would have to pay.0

I understand I cancelled but surely if I'm paying until 28th then I should have access to the broadband. Just like when you cancel sky and give 30 days notice, they turn your services off on the 30th day.0

If you wanted the services to the 28th, you should have agreed that as the cancellation date.
Generally people cancel for one of two reasons - house move or changing provider. In either case the customer is not going to want service from the original company at that location after the cancellation date as they are either not there any more, or they have a new provider from the agreed date so further provision of service by the original provider is impossible.

My cancellation date was 6th which I'm fine with. My issue is that they are charging me until 28th for a service I can't even use. If I changed my cancellation date to the 28th like you suggested then there would still be another 38 days added on to that, which would leave me in the same situation. If you cancel with any other provider they do not turn your services off until the 30th day. My cancellation date should be 6th but the services should t be turned off until 28th. Yes I'm going to another provider.0

Both providers can't provide you with broadband at the same time down your phone line so the existing provider will have to stop providing on the 6th if the new provider is taking over then.
The fact that the switch date is before the 30 day notice period ends (which by implication from your post is the 28th) doesn't absolve you from paying through to the end of the notice period.
For optimum fiscal efficiency, when switching give your 30 days notice and arrange the new provider to take over on the final day of the notice period. No idea how straightforward it is to actually co-ordinate two ISPs to do this though.Proud member of the wokerati, though I don't eat tofu.Home is where my books are.Solar PV 5.2kWp system, SE facing, >1% shading, installed March 2019.Mortgage free July 20230 -
I have arranged for virgin to take over on 28th. My issue is that I'm paying BT until this date but they have cut my services off today. I was asking that surely I would still have access to BT's services until the end of my notice period and the 6th would be the date I notified them of cancelling.0

BiB - I don't think that's correct.
If on the 28th Sep you asked for your service to be ceased on 28th Oct, you would pay up until the 28th Oct and have service until 28th Oct
