Paid for double, got twin room

I recently booked a hotel room abroad using otel.com, and booked and pre-paid a double room in a 4* hotel. The hotel we chose was quite far out of town, but we chose it because it was the only place left in our price bracket that was a double, not a twin (we were away celebrating our engagement). My reservation confirmation said double, but when we turned up we were told there were only twins left. Our payment was non-refundable, so we had to accept this. I'm currently complaining about it but neither the hotel nor the booking agency is taking this seriously, but it meant that our stay wasn't particularly romantic and, above all, we paid for a service that we just did not receive, with no option of getting our money back. Do you think I am being too fussy about this?
This has happened before to us in Britain and when we complained, they apologised profusely and bumped us up to a suite!

Could you not have pushed the beds together?Gone ... or have I?0

another couple of years and you'll be complaining that you got a double not a twin0

A lot of continental hotels have two beds which can either be push together as a double or seperated to use as a twin room. Perhaps this was the case here.Cover me in honey and fling me to the hermaphrodites!0

What was the difference in price? As others have said, you could have pushed the beds together. If it wasn't a huge amount of money, is it really worth pursuing this?0

normally with the majority of hotels, it is a first come first served on whether you get a double or twin..
. did you call the hotel to confirm your reservation and double check you were noted down for a double, or did you go there? 0 -
What?
We really are a nation of complainers! Sure the hotel ran out of double beds but is it worth your time and effort for such a small misdemeanour?
Beds are not the only place for romance anyway so does it really matter what shape the bed is?0 -
I have much sympathy for you, OP. I've had many similar gripes myself.
My husband and I have had this problem pretty much every time we've travelled and pushing two beds together and having a single cover each is NOT, as some others have suggested, a reasonable compromise, nor is it the answer to a romantic getaway.
I'd be interested to know the outcome of your complaint although personally, I now email hotels ahead of time and stipulate in very clear terms that the bed must be a double.
We had two single beds on castors once, pushed together. We couldn't even touch each other without the beds rolling apart and someone disappearing down the middle. We'd gone away for a very special occassion, so it wasn't in the last bit amusing.0 -
When you book something just cos you book a double room - it is not guaranteed (the same as it isn't if you ask for a sea view)Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly.0
