Hi all,
in case it helps someone... this was frustrating me and I've found the solution.
When you choose Internet Explorer as default browser in Windows 10, it still fails to open links from outlook 2010 (and I think 2007, and 2003) automatically... a popup asking you to choose the default progam always opens.
If you are having this problem, the solution is this: create a new entry in the registry, thus:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htmlfile\shell\opennew\command
set the Default value to the same value found in the "...\shell\open\command" key default.
You'll need to create both the "opennew" and "command" keys to then add the url to the default value.
NB: COPY from the ...open\command key value and paste in the newly created "opennew\command" key
If you're not having this problem, no need to give a load of unrelated opinions as it wont help those trying to resolve the issue.
Hope this helps someone.
