    Obviously we viewed the House we were buying we didn't look into the next garden tho why would we? If we are told byb3 people it's detached what need it there to demand the next door land owner to pride the gates open to ensure its detached.? It's only a low level garage which we new he had but we didn't know it was attached that is the point.

    But even if you couldn't be bothered walking around the outside of the house before buying it, presumably you knew that you weren't buying the land on that side - so there would always be the risk of someone building something against your wall.

    What can you do about it? Well, what would you like done about it? It's your house now. Do you think you've suffered some sort of loss?

    The boundary must then run right along the side of the house, which should be a red flag for a detached house.



    Why would it be? there are thousands of detached houses in the UK where a detached houses boundary butts right up to the boundary and typically there is an alley way of the next house to allow access from the front to back garden.


    Most detached houses don't sit in the middle of a plot of land with garden all round
    Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.

    Not necessarily - there's a row of houses near me which, from a distance looks like a terrace.
    However, there is a gap of 8-12" between each pair, so they are detached but you'd have a job walking around one.

    Having seen Phil99's post, it reminds me that the road I grew up in all the detached houses were right up to the boundary one side, each pair being separated by a driveway.

    Whilst really annoying, it sounds like you (and your purchasing 'team' e.g surveyor ) mis-bought a house IYSWIM. You relied on words, surveyor didn't take a look over the side fence or whatever. Sold.

    What can you do, now? Sell it or take someone from your team to court I imagine, but compensation will not run into the sums that a semi nee detached may cost on resale.

    If it's not a deal breaker in terms of noise etc and you love the property/area, stay in neighbours good books and ask if he would consider repositioning it, should he chose to sell in the future - when there is something in it for him?

    Hope it works out though.

    Yes, you're right. I've seen those too. Less than 8" as well. But you'd certainly see those properties didn't have a shared wall. Still, it seems OP perhaps didn't even glance at the deeds.

    Are you sure the garage is attached and not just adjacent too.

    How the HECK did you not notice this 'detached' house was attached to something? I mean really............???

    I just don't see at all how someone could make that mistake. Maybe if you were passing on the bus, but no way if you were buying it and had viewed it etc.

    I doubt the surveyor misunderstood what they were looking at, just didn't see a need to point out the obvious to the OP. And I doubt it's an issue from a valuation point of view.
