If she were in another job would you still feel an obligation to support, be it a dog walker or street walker. Both self employed both very different. I have friends in a myriad of jobs and feel no obligation to spend my money with them, whatever their business.

I think I might guess the final company and I would keep away from it.

You do have a dilemma, though, as you want to help your friend. In that case I think you will have to tell her your concerns about that company.

I was persuaded to go one party, where I suspect an ex-husband was trying con his ex-wife into an expensive pyramid scheme.

I can't see how by going to these parties and buying something you are supporting her much.

Say you buy an item for £10 she might get £2 of that and you waste £8 on something you don't want. I would go along to give moral support and say something along the lines of, I won't be buying anything as I don't need anything but I will bring along a couple of bottle of wines (or whatever she gives out). She will have to pay for the wine etc so by doing that you are helping her make more profit as the wine cost will not have to come out of her profit ifswim.

However I would not do that for the one you do not agree with, she is your friend she should respect you on that. I would also not be involving my friends in this, to be honest I think that is a bit of a cheek she has asked, its one thing asking you to come along but expecting you to get others involved is a step too far. I have never meet anyone who likes these things its amazing how many of the cheapest item available get sold on the night :rotfl:

Option 3 definitely. If I were you, I'd sit your friend down and tell her the reality of these pyramid selling schemes, which may have the veneer of respectability because they actually sell something, but which still leave most of their participants in debt at the end of the day, after being persuaded to buy large amounts of stock which they will never sell.

I've got a couple of FB friends at the moment, one of whom is extolling the virtues of aloe vera and the other is selling a diet plan. I wouldn't mind but the first one is a qualified pharmacy technician, she, of all people, should be aware of these snake oil empty promises.
The other, who recently lost a large amount of weight when her husband left her, is now trying to tell us that her diet plan products were responsible. I'm getting sick and tired of the "invites" and the messages trying to persuade me to sell their over-priced tat because it will "fit in with my busy lifestyle" etc etc.

You obviously care about your friend, you need to let her know that these schemes will not help her in the long term, unless she wants to lose friends as well as money. More helpful, would be to point her towards this forum, to help her find out what benefits she may be entitled to and to help her with job applications etc.

Good luck, I know it's hard to dodge these things sometimes. I'm the proud owner of a horrid glass owl, a revolting set of lurid, nylon underwear and a bottle of chocolate body spread (which tasted nasty) thanks to these "parties"!

Be warned that when someone's back is against the wall they can take any criticism of their con (the dodgy company that is so obviously a Pyramid scam it's a wonder it hasn't been forcibly shut down) that you may lose them as a friend.

They may well be aware they're compromising their ethics to put food onto the table, but equally they may just be holding their heads above water by flogging this nonsense to the gullible.

On the other hand, I don't think you can ever have too much Tuppaware.
