Trying to get DVLA code, anyone else having problems?

I am due to be picking up a hire car in Venice in a weeks time, I have just popped onto the DVLA website to get my code and it won't accept any of my details, just keeps giving me a message saying it cannot give me any details at this time, well this service is useless, looks like I will have to spend an hour on the phone and somehow get cover at work to allow me to do this, and if they insisit on posting it I think I am going to have to cancel my holiday. This service is a total farce.

May be worth checking with car hire company if they actually need it?
We are hiring soon in Spain with Centauro and they state on their website don't need DVLA code.0 -
I logged on a few (5?) days ago and it all worked like a dream -0

we've been using it twice a week no problem0

I used it earlier today without incident.
I still think it's dumb, but it worked OK for me.Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?0 -
Seeing this post prompted me that I need to do this as well for car hire in 10 days time in the US.
I'm having the same problem. First attempt it says please check your details, second attempt it locks out and says I need to call them. Tried on two browsers, same problem. Definitely putting my details in properly.
Looks like I'm phoning them tomorrow too...0 -
Has anyone ever been asked for this code?Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.0

I haven't , no.
Anecdotally I hear that they are never asked for when abroad, it's only this stupid over-regulated and over-cautious country that uses them. The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....0 -

I phoned yesterday, and to be fair got through within a minute or so and a code was issued without a problem.
No real explanation of why I can't use the website though, and it still doesn't work online.
What a shambles and a waste of everyone's time.0 -
Just back from holiday in Cyprus and the hire car company never asked to see the code. Not surprisingly.
I think American car hire firms will just be totally bamboozled if you start waving around a DVLA code. Have you seen how they react when you give them an old paper license? Utter bewilderment. Last year I hired a car out there and gave them my photocard and the paper copy. They stared blankly at the paper copy for a full minute, turned it over and stared at the back for a while then shrugged and said "I have no idea what to do with that" and gave it me back. They have no experience with paper format licenses at all and therefore no interest in seeing them.0
