    RBS won't.

That's just not true. You can make payments from RBS/Natwest literally 24x7. The only exception will be when they have maintenance but that's just for a few hours.

Are you confusing the ability to make a payment at the weekend with the date with which the payment will show on your statement?

RBS don't make it clear on the payment page that a transfer at the weekend will still go through immediately. They ask you for a payment date and the first available date is the next working day. Most people would assume from that that the payment won't reach the receiving account until that date which, as you say Archi, is incorrect. The only way to know that a weekend payment will actually go through immediately is to read the help page for faster payments timescales.

Just make sure you do the FP online as they hold other (eg telephone) payments to new payees until the next day for some reason, I suspect to prevent erroneous transfers.

Yup, if the rbs system is the same as NatWest it isn't very clear.

I set up a payment from my NatWest account to my Santander account yesterday. The only date I could select was the 5th (tomorrow). But it definitely went through straight away and is showing as transferred on both accounts when I check online banking.

I never made the payment because late on Sunday afternoon, a full month‘s interest landed in the account, despite the only qualifying funding being £8. An external cheque for £900 was paid in on Thursday 3 September, so do you think it was not assessed until it started earning interest on the Saturday? That would mean the account month is actually the 5th to the 4th incl.

The cheque value wouldn't clear (and start to earn interest) until T+2, so Monday 7th.

That's incorrect, Santander specifically state that cheques paid into a non business current account on a Thursday earn interest from the Saturday .
